The year 2017 started with the celebration of 50th foundation day on 3rd January, 2017. Hon‟ble Minister Higher Education, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy graced the 50th Foundation Day Ceremony as the Chief Guest. Hon‟ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) (Sambalpur) Mr. Nagendra Kumar Pradhan, and Hon‟ble Member of Legislative Assembly (Sambalpur), Prof.(Dr.) RaseswariPanigrahi, graced this ceremony as Guests of Honour. Noted Hindi poet Sri LeeladharJagori was honoured with the prestigious Gangadhar National Award for Poetry-2015 for his creativity and attainment in poetry. The faculty members, officers and other employees who retired in the year 2016 were also felicitated on this occasion. Sri. D.V. Swamy IAS, RDC Northern zone, assumed the charge of office of the Vice- Chancellor on 10.11.2017, consequent upon the completion of the tenure of Prof. C.R. Tripathy. Professor S.K. Sahu assumed the charge of the office of the Registrar on 30.04.2017 consequent upon the transfer of Dr. M. Muthukumar IAS. Dr.(Mrs.) Soorya Thankppan IPS assumed the charge as Registrar on 16.11.2017. It is a cluster university, having 223 affiliated colleges spread over ten and a half districts of Western Odisha. Since syllabus revision is a key factor in the academic growth of an institution, Sambalpur University has overhauled and updated the undergraduate syllabi under the much needed CBCS system. The Postgraduate Departments on the Jyoti Vihar campus, for their part, have also been restructuring and improving their course contents from time to time in order to catch up with advancements in various sectors of human knowledge. Sambalpur University has expanded its academic range over the years to 24 Postgraduate Departments in 41 subjects, and running self-financing programmes in 12 subjects. In 2017, 57 PhD degrees were awarded and 354 scientific articles were published. Through self-financing or Distance Education mode, the University also offers different courses like Computer Sciences, Bio-Technology, Bio- Informatics, Executive MBA, Finance and Control, Environmental Science and Engineering, Geospatial Technology, Nanotechnology, Social Works, Journalism, 8 Food Science and Nutrition, Translation Studies etc. A five-year integrated BBA-LLB course and P.G. Diploma in IRPM on self-financing scheme is offered by Lajpat Rai Law College, Sambalpur, a constituent college of the University. The Sambalpur University Institute of Information Technology (SUIIT) another constituent college of the University has been offering quality education and research in the field of Information Technology and Engineering. In the session 2017-18, out of total 182 admissions into different programmes of SUIIT, 85 students were admitted through Odisha JEE into B.Tech programme. Three new departments namely Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Nanotechnology and Social Works were opened during 2017 and two new departments namely Education and Sanskrit have been approved by the Syndicate to be opened from 2018. Three years Integrated B.Ed.-M.Ed. has already received approval of NCTE to start from the 2018-19 Session. M.Phil. programme in Hindi started from session 2017. Department of Business Administration introduced a new course MBA in Agri Business to be run in participation with OUAT, Chiplima. It is also proposed to open a Centre for Foreign Languages with Chinese Language to begin with. The excellence of the University has been recognized through the accreditation of A-Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for the assessment period 2010-2015. Departmental Research Support (DRS) status is given to three departments by the UGC and Fund for Improvement of Science & Technology (FIST) status to four departments by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India. The School of Chemistry has reached level-II of DST-FIST research programme. The school received Rs.3.10 crore during 2013- 2018 under DRS (UGC). Four research projects of Rs.30 lakhs are successfully progressing under the supervision of faculty members of the School. One research project of Rs.1.17 crore has been sanctioned by DST to be jointly carried out with LMNIT. Rs.0.9 crore has been sanctioned to the Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics under the twinning project sanctioned by Department of Bio Technology (DBT), New Delhi. The School of Life Science has undertaken research projects sanctioned by DST (Government of Odisha) and consultancy projects from Vedanta Limited. The Department of Environmental Science has undertaken research projects sanctioned by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and consultancy projects by Vedanta Limited and Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited 9 (MCL). The Department of Physics has undertaken research project sponsored by Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), DST-Govt. of India. The Department of Odia has completed a UGC sponsored project and the Department of Anthropology has undertaken a project sponsored by Government of Odisha. One project funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi is running in the Department of Library and Information Science. One research project funded by DST-SERB and another by Media Lab Asia are running in SUIIT. The Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics signed a MOU with Science Foundation for Tribal and Rural Resource Development (SFTRRD), Bhubaneswar for Collaborative Research in Medicinal Plant and Product Development for Therapeutic application. The Department of Computer Science and Applications has signed an MOU with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Pune for development of Advanced Computing Centre and installation of Super Computer
