Professional and Academic Journal articles about the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway In 2013 a small team of LYRS members started to read through all the editions of The Engineer held electronically by ‘Grace’s Guide’. When we started we had access to issues of The Engineer from 1856 to 1930 – that’s nearly 4000 issues. We noted the main points of each reference to the LYR, its predecessor, the companies it took over, and its people. This is the result of our work: nearly 2,500 references from The Engineer and The Electrical Review (there are fewer editions of The Electrical Review on line, and they are not all in the same place). Searching This is a fully searchable pdf file. In most pdf readers you should press Ctrl F. This should bring a small search window onto your screen. Type your search term into this search window Type your search term into the window, press Enter and you will be taken to the first mention of your search term in the text. Press Enter again to find the next one, and so on. For each entry there are eleven columns: Column heading Brief description. Brief description of article This is a short paragraph that outlines what is in the full article. Author of article Most articles are anonymous. Named authors are cited here. Title of article This is the main title or the article. But where there is a long article of different sections this might be the section heading. Key words, names, or phrases A few words that sum up what the article is about. Key in article words include names of people, places, organisations, and railway companies. Type of article Articles are categorised as ‘Business, News, Technical, Personal, or Other’. Original print source The name of the original All the articles are presented journal. in order of: Volume The journal’s volume Original print source number. For The Engineer Volume number there are two 26-week Page number volumes in each calendar year. Page Number The page number of the reference to the LYR. Date The date of publication Electronic source A hyperlink to the issue in which the reference to the LYR appears. (Links to Electrical Review take you to the volume.) What next? We will continue developing this database of references to the LYR. Grace’s Guide now has more issues of The Engineer (though as they are from after 1930, the hit rate for LYR topics is much lower) as well as editions of Engineering. We are also investigating access to other journals. So these pages will continue to be updated. Acknowledgements Our ‘engineering journals reading project’ would not have been possible if the people at Grace’s Guide had not made The Engineer available. In particular we thank Maryann Soper who responded to our various questions and comments. The LYRS volunteers who painstakingly looked (with a bit of help from pdf search) for LYR references (without getting side-tracked by all the other interesting material) were: Mel Draper; Michael Hughes; Derek King; Robin Pennie; Peter Tennant; Dave Westall; and Tom Wray. And thanks to Martin Nield and Roger Mellor for making sure the team’s work is now available to anyone interested in the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
