This acknowledgement demonstrates a commitment to beginning the process of working to dismantle ongoing legacies of settler colonialism, and to recognize the hundreds of Indigenous Nations who continue to resist, live, and uphold their sacred relations across their lands. We also pay our respect to Indigenous elders past, present, and future and to those who have stewarded this land throughout the generations TABLE OF CONTENTS d Welcome from the ASA President..............................................................................................................................................................................1 Program Schedule Friday, August 6 ................................................................................................................................................................................................2 Saturday, August 7 ...........................................................................................................................................................................................6 Sunday, August 8 ............................................................................................................................................................................................39 Monday, August 9 .......................................................................................................................................................................................... 70 Tuesday, August 10 ...................................................................................................................................................................................... 100 Participants Index .......................................................................................................................................................................................................130 Session Index ...............................................................................................................................................................................................................156 WELCOME FROM THE ASA PRESIDENT 1 Aldon D. Morris ASA President Northwestern University I am thrilled to welcome you to the August 2021 ASA virtual meeting. It has been a difficult and challenging year. As your president, it was highly disappointing to have to move to a virtual event rather than an in-person meeting in Chicago, my hometown. I envisioned a great meeting in Chicago where the cultural and political doors flung open for sociologists to walk through, enjoy, and flex their sociological imaginations inspired by a great city as we interrogated the state of affairs of humans globally and historically. The COVID -19 pandemic would not cooperate to make such a meeting possible. When we recognized we had to have a virtual meeting, ASA staff, the Council, session organizers, and the 2021 Program (Rhacel Salazar Parreñas, Nancy López, Joyce Bell, Hae Yeon Choo, Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve, Jeff Goodwin, Tod Hamilton, Mignon Moore, Pamela Oliver, Brittany Slatton, Earl Wright) and local Chicago (Andrew Papachristos, Joyce Bell, Savina Balasubramanian, Heather Dalmage, Tiffany Davis, Amanda Lewis, Tracey Lewis-Elligan, Cynthia Manns, Mary Pattillo, Michael Rodríguez-Muñiz, Quincy Thomas Stewart, Vilna Bashi Treitler, Celeste Watkins-Hayes) committees sprang into action to organize an exceptional virtual meeting. I deeply thank them for their commitments and efforts to persevere and triumph despite the challenges. The driving spirit behind these efforts asked whether we could use the pandemic as a pivotal moment of opportunity to do special things to produce a great meeting unimaginable by an in-person meeting. We embraced the idea that sociologists are immensely creative and cherish unique challenges. Our 2021 theme—Emancipatory Sociology: Rising to the Du Boisian Challenge—fits perfectly with innovations required to launch a virtual meeting. The planners of the 2021 meeting have organized exciting panels, virtual gatherings and celebrations, and numerous fora to explore the social world through sociological theories, debates, and methodologies. The burning issues of the day, including inequalities associated with race, gender, class, sexual orientations, and health disparities will be highlighted and explored. Troubling issues regarding climate and environmental challenges will be examined. The nature and promise of sociology will be examined, paying attention to the discipline’s history, present, and future. In this respect, we have riveted attention on the international nature of sociology, especially regarding the global south, settler colonization, and decolonializing the discipline. Special efforts have been made to make this meeting exceptionally diverse and inclusive. I welcome the participation of our membership as well as our special interdisciplinary guests to the 2021 ASA meeting. Let’s walk through these virtual doors and get down to sociological business analyzing our troubled world. But as we walk through these doors, let’s remember to have fun, meet new colleagues, and celebrate the lives of colleagues no longer with us. Welcome! FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 2021 2 Friday, 11:00 am 0532.
