Each neuron, however, is not a mere stardust. A single neuron integrates many inputs thereunto, so as to determine whether the output signal is released or not. Neurons are connected to each other by synapses to build neuron network, which underlies brain function. Our primary research interest is to elucidate, in molecular terms, how one or more neurons are able to regulate neuron excitability and synaptic efficiency. In particular, we are interested in studying in vitro how the versatile intracellular messenger calcium ion mediates a number of signals differentially, thereby achieving adequate regulation of synaptic efficiency and neuron excitability.
