12524 February 7, 2017 BRIDGETON BOARD OF EDUCATION PUBLIC ACTION MEETING February 7, 2017 The public action meeting of the Bridgeton Board of Education was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Mr. Morgan. Board Members present were Mrs. Mary Peterson, Mr. David Gonzalez, Ms. Erica Mosley, Mr. Albert Morgan, Mr. Edward Bethea, Ms. Ashlee Todd and Ms. Dulce Gomez. Mr. Kenny SmithBey and Ms. Angelia Edwards were absent. Also in attendance were Dr. Thomasina Jones, Superintendent, Mrs. Nicole M. Albanese, School Business Administrator, Dr. Robin Daniels, Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Aja Thomas, Human Resources Manager, Mr. Paul Kalac, Board Solicitor. Prayer was offered by Mr. Gonzalez. 1. OPENING ACTIVITIES/MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the Bridgeton Public School District is to provide multiple pathways for all students to attain the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and meet the needs of our diverse student population. All students will be provided with the opportunity and resources to succeed through the creation of state-of-the-art safe learning environments, which will ultimately enable all students to graduate from high school and become productive members of a global community. 1.1 CALL TO ORDER of meeting by the President 1.2 PRAYER 1.3 FLAG SALUTE 1.4 ROLL CALL by the School Business Administrator 1.5 OPEN PUBLIC MEETING STATEMENT The New Jersey Open Public Meeting Law was enacted to insure the right of the public to have advance notice of and to attend the meetings of the public bodies at which any business affecting their interests is discussed or acted upon. Bridgeton Board of Education has caused notice of this meeting to be published by having the date, time and place thereof posted on the bulletin board in the lobby of the Bank Street Administration Building and mailed to the City Clerk of Bridgeton, South Jersey News, Bridgeton, The Press of Atlantic City, Pleasantville and Radio Station WSNJ, Bridgeton on July 8, 2016. 1.6 PUBLIC PARTICIPATION-Ms. Cynthia Wilks addressed the board regarding the hiring of Mary Wilks to be the assistant coach. She understands that because of the nepotism policy that prohibits the hiring of a relative by the supervisor. She asked if M. Wilks could volunteer but was told this could not occur either. She requested to find a way to work together for change and to resolve the issue. Mrs. Peterson asked if there were special circumstances when you cannot find another qualified applicant for the position. Dr. Jones introduced Dr. Daniels the new Assistant Superintendent. 12525 February 7, 2017 1.7 RESOLUTIONS – Motion by Mr. Williams, second by Mr. Williams approving the following resolutions: Governor’s Teachers of the Year Governor’s Educational Services Professionals of the Year Motion carried, roll call vote was 7-0. Motion by Mr. Williams, second by Mr. Gonzalez approving the Cooperative Contract to Purchase Apple IPhones resolution. Motion carried, roll call vote was 6-0-1, with Mr. Morgan abstaining. Motion by Mrs. Peterson, second by Mr. Gonzalez approving the Support of the Senate Select Committee on School Funding Fairness resolution. Motion carried, roll call vote was 7-0. Motion by Mr. Williams, second by Mrs. Peterson approving the Withdraw of Capital Reserve for Eligible Projects resolution. Motion carried, roll call vote was 7-0. 1.8 PRESENTATIONS – Bulldogs of the Month – Dr. Jones presented the bulldogs of the month. Each student received a plaque of recognition and rewards. Governor’s Teachers of the Year & Governor’s Educational Services Professionals of the Year were recognized by the board. Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Report – Dr. Jones presented the monthly HIB report to the board. Dr. Jones presented each case, unsubstantiated and substantiated, and any discipline shared with the board. No changes were proposed. Dr. Jones showed a video on the early college high school program which if approved will allow Bridgeton High School students to earn college credits while at the high school. The students would be housed at the college and we would provide transportation. Ms. Gomez asked if students will be permitted to participate in sports and social activities. Discussion occurred over the potential loss of funding in State Aid. Dr. Jones explained if the district were to lose funding as proposed by Gov. Approved a Sensory Integration Training by presenter Mr. Daniel from Fun & Function. Mr. Daniel will provide K-4 MD & ASD teachers training regarding how to provide support and intervention for our student's sensory needs at Buckshutem Road & Quarter Mile Lane Schools. The workshop will be held at Buckshutem Rd. School, Conference Room from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM on March 15, 2017. Training will be divided into two sessions 8:30-11:30 AM and 12:30 - 3:30 PM. In each residency, artists in residence will work with K-3 grade teachers to infuse Storytelling throughout the curriculum as a means to increase student achievement. Each residency will consist of 2 professional development workshops, 10 days working with teachers, 1 culminating activity. All artists’ fees and supplies are included.
