Bristol Photowalkers 55+ January Walks

Photography Walks for the over-55s These walks are free and take place twice a month throughout the year. They are part of the national Walking for Health programme and led by qualified Walking for Health leaders. Walks start at 1030 unless otherwise stated. If you’re a new walker please arrive for 1020 to register with the group. Photowalks are 1.5 to 2 miles at a leisurely pace. Walking time is around 60 minutes and total time is up to 120 minutes including photography stops. Afterwards we usually stop at a nearby cafe for refreshments. We welcome anyone with an interest in photography, from beginners to experienced amateurs, using any type of camera from smartphone to DSLR. Join us to get more out of your camera, take better photographs and share ideas, while enjoying easy and effective exercise. See following pages for: Monday 6 January 2020: Ashton Court Wednesday 22 January 2020: SS Great Britain to Underfall Yard Monday 6 January 2020 Ashton Court Meeting point: Courtyard Cafe, Ashton Court Mansion Walk details: Ashton Court is a country park and mansion with 850 acres of woodland and grassland, with two deer parks. The mansion was largely built in the 17th century although its core dates back to the 15th and successive enlargement and remodelling continued into the 19th. The walk takes a circular route through the deer park, along the closed internal service road and into the formal gardens beside the mansion. It’s a mix of gravel path, tarmac road, paved footpaths and possibly grass to get closer to the deer, with a moderately steep hill through the deer park. Optional refreshments in the Courtyard Cafe afterwards. Suggested themes: deer, house and gardens Public transport: X3/X4 (City Centre to Portishead). Get off at Clanage Road and take Kennel Lodge Road to Ashton Court Mansion 24 (Southmead Hospital to Ashton Vale), 505 (Southmead Hospital to Long Ashton Park & Ride), X1, X2, X7, X8 (City Centre to various destinations). Get off at Bower Ashton, take the footpath under the flyover and follow Clanage Road and Kennel Lodge Road to Ashton Court Mansion Car: Pay and Display at Mansion House car park (£1.20 at time of writing), accessed from the A369 Clanage Road via Kennel Lodge Road. Use postcode BS41 9JN Wednesday 22 January 2020: SS Great Britain to Underfall Yard Meeting point: SS Great Britain, Gas Ferry Road, Bristol BS1 6TY Walk details: The walk starts at the SS Great Britain and follows Harbourside Walk past Albion Dock, Bristol Marina and The Cottage Inn before entering Underfall Yard. Along the way we’ll see Banksy’s ‘Girl with a Pierced Eardrum’, the coloured houses of Clifton, and various harbour and boatbuilding activities. We finish at the Underfall Yard Visitor Centre in time to see the historic pumps running at 1230. Underfall Yard has been crucial to the operation and maintenance.of the Floating Harbour since its creation in 1809. It’s home to maritime businesses involved in boatbuilding, marine engineering, metal working and training, as well as the Harbour Master and Docks Engineer. It’s a flat route along paved paths, although some care may be needed to avoid obstacles in the boatyard. Refreshments afterwards at Pickle cafe in the Visitor Centre. Suggested themes: engineering; recreation Public transport: Metrobus m2 (City Centre to Long Ashton P&R). Get off at SS Great Britain and take Cumberland Road and Gas Ferry Road to the meeting point. Buses 71, 505, X1, X2, X3, X4, X6, X7, X8, X9, Portway P&R serve Hotwells, close to Underfall Yard and approx 15 minutes walk from SS Great Britain.. Get off at Hotwells/Merchants Road and take Merchants Road, Avon Crescent and Gas Ferry Road to the meeting point. Car: P&D parking at Maritime Heritage Centre Car Park, 24 Gas Ferry Road, Bristol BS1 6UP (£1/hr). Long Ashton Park & Ride, Bristol BS3 2HB. Take metrobus m2 to SS Great Britain (see above). .
