HALF MARATHON MAP LISTEN TO THE SPOTIFY PLAYLIST OF INTEREST 1. Beethoven’s Birthplace The Beethoven House was founded in 1889 by the Beethoven-Haus association. Beethoven was born in the rear building at number 20 Bonngasse and was baptized HALF MARATHON POINTS HALF MARATHON on 17 Dec 1770. The house is now serving as a museum and cultural institution and is considered as a memorial site. 2. The Name of Jesus Church Located in the heart of Bonn city center - between the market and the Beethoven House - the Namen-Jesu-Kirche has been an important place of prayer, remembrance and worship for many Bonn families for three centuries. 3. The Sterntor City Gate The Sterntor City Gate at the edge of Bottlerplatz provides reminders of Bonn’s fortifications in the Middle Ages. It consists of the remainder of Bonn’s old city wall and observers can imagine how imposing the city fortifications must have been in the Middle Ages. 4. Beethoven-Denkmal This large bronze statue of Ludwig van Beethoven, which stands OF INTEREST on the Münsterplatz, was created on the 75th birth anniversary of his birth. Bonner Münster Also in the Münsterplatz square is a large Catholic church, the Bonner Münster. This was formerly the house of the Privy Councilor von Breuning of the German Order of Knights. In 1777, he lost his life in the fire at the electoral prince’s palace. His widow Helene and her four children offered the security of family life to the young Ludwig. It is one of Germany’s oldest churches, having been built between the 11th and 13th centuries. 6. Mean Average Sculpture by Tony Cragg “Mean Average” is an abstract bronze sculpture by sculptor Anthony Cragg, on the Remigiusplatz in Bonn. It was given by the artist to the city of Bonn in 2014. OF INTEREST 7. Altes-Rathaus HALF MARATHON POINTS HALF MARATHON Beethoven enjoyed interacting with musicians and students from other courts in the renowned “Zehrgarten.” An adjoining bookshop next to the Zehrgaten made Ludwig become familiar with the literature of the Age of Edify. 8. St. Remigius Church The construction of St. Remigius Parish Church began in 1272 by the Franciscan Order (Order of Friars Minor) and was completed and concentrated in 1307. This is where Beethoven played the organ at 6 a.m. in the morning service. The organ’s keyboard is also kept in the Beethoven House. 9. Voyager Formerly Rheingasse 24, now the Voyager Fantasy Gaming Pub. Ludwig Van Beethoven lived here from 1776 to 1785. In a manuscript written by Gottfried Fischer in 1838, he describes a desk here that “…fans out vertically like an accordion is an open window, which implies the option of change. The window highlights the view across the Rhine towards the siebengebirge that was young Ludwig’s favorite perspective from the attic of his parental home. A small bird perched on the window frame symbolizes the state of intellectual freedom. In contrast, the OF INTEREST elongated table legs represent the possibility of failing and refer to the young composer’s different personal situation. The small child- size chair in front of the desk further emphasizes this contrast.” 10. Alter Zoll From here you can see the most beautiful views of Bonn towards the Rhine and Siebengebirge. It is what is left of the city fortress and forms the south- eastern end of the old town. Markus Lüpertz Beethoven Sculpture Ludwig van Beethoven has been immortalized in numerous portraits and monuments, which - more or less successfully - approximate his external form. Markus Lüpertz took a different path: his Beethoven sculpture does not serve the expectations of a monument, but is the plastic projection of inwardness, spirit and genius. 12. Kreuzkirche Bonn The Kreuzkirche has been the church of the Kreuzkirchengemeinde since 1871 and also the Protestant city church of Bonn. With a seating capacity of 1200 seats it is the largest Protestant church in the Rhineland and the largest church in Bonn. 13. Hammerschmidt Villa Hammerschmidt Villa was the primary official residence of the President of the Federal Re- public of Germany from 1950 until 1994. The Villa is also called the “White House of Bonn”, and served as a political symbol of West Ger- many and its capital Bonn. OF INTEREST 14. World Conference Center The World Conference Center Bonn is a combination of modern architecture and first-class facilities that enables events of every sort to be held for up to 5,000 people. The World Conference Center Bonn is located in the middle of Bonn’s former government quarter, HALF MARATHON POINTS HALF MARATHON in the immediate vicinity of the United Nations Campus and next to the river Rhine. 15. Post Tower Post Tower is the tallest skyscraper in Bonn and the head- quarters of the logistic company Deutsche Post DHL and the worldwide logistics company DHL. It was designed by German-American architect Helmut Jahn and won the 2002 Silver Emporis Skyscraper Award. 16. Rheinaue Leisure Park The Rheinaue Recreation and Leisure Park has become a landmark of the city. The govern- ment of Japan engaged the president of the Japanese landscape gardener’s association, Dr. Akira Sato, to create a Japanese garden in the Park as a present and a contribution to the Federal Horticultural Show in 1979. The garden has a picturesque lake with a small island, as well as waterfalls, a thirteen-level pagoda and a rock garden. There is also a fountain and gazebo where you can sit to enjoy the silence or meditate. 17. Godesburg Castle The Godesburg was built in the early 13th century on the Godesberg, a hill of volcanic origin. It was largely destroyed following a siege in 1583 at the start of the Cologne War. In 1891, the German emperor Wilhelm II donated the castle’s ruin to the city of Bad Godesberg. OF INTEREST HALF MARATHON POINTS HALF MARATHON 18. Godesberg City Park The Godesberg city park was built in 1880 in the style of an English landscape garden. In 1892, a spa park restaurant was built accord- ing to plans by the Cologne architect Josef Crones (1848–1934). The park is right next to the city center. 19. St. Remigius Church, Königswinter, Germany The Catholic parish church of St. Remigi- us in Königswinter, a town in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia , was built in 1779/80. The church building stands as a monument under monument protection. 20. Nibelungenhalle The Nibelungenhalle is a domed building in Königswinter, a town in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is on the way to the summit of the Drachenfels , where Siegfried is said to have killed the dragon, and shows a collection of paintings by Hermann Hendrich for Richard Wagner’s opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung and for Wagner’s Grail opera Parsifal . The hall includes a “dragon cave” and a reptile zoo in the outdoor area. OF INTEREST 21. Drachenburg Castle Drachenburg Castle is a private villa styled as a palace and constructed in the late 19th century. It was completed in only two years (1882–84) on the Drachenfels hill in Königswinter. The castle was used in the German TV-series Babylon Berlin as the home of Alfred Nyssen. HALF MARATHON POINTS HALF MARATHON 22. Drachenfels Hill The Drachenfels, a thousand-foot hill in Germany, is a site surrounded by legends. At the summit of the hill lie the ruins of a 12th century castle known as Burg Drachenfels. Literally meaning “Dragon’s Rock,” the Drachenfels abounds with drag- on-related legends. One claims that a dragon lived here, but a Christian maiden’s prayers made it fly away and never return. In another, a different dragon is said to have been defeated by the use of gunpowder. According to another, Fafnir, the son of a dwarf king was turned into a dragon by a cursed ring and later slain by the mythical hero Sigurd. Fafnir lived in a cave full of treasure, which legend holds was located in the Drachenfels. 23. Rüdenet The Rüdenet is one of three Roman quarries in the Siebengebirge where trachyte was mined. OF INTEREST From the 13th century, the Rüdenet is said to have been used to complete the Cologne Cathe- dral. Since the 14th century, the Rüdenet farm was one of at least four farms near Drachenfels Castle that provided the residents there with everything they needed to live.
