School Uniform September 2021 Jordanhill School This booklet contains details of the standard school uniform. The neat, tidy turnout of our pupils is a credit to parents and is an important factor in the school’s reputation in the community. It would be greatly appreciated if parents would ensure that pupils wear the appropriate uniform at all times. Correct school uniform must be worn not only in school, but whenever travelling to and from school, when on study leave but visiting the School, and whenever representing the school. Exceptions to this will be for specific activities and participating pupils will be advised. • Only those items specified on the uniform list will be permitted. • Pupils must be neat and tidy in appearance. • Shirts must be tucked in, and have collar and cuff buttons fastened. T- shirts worn under shirts must be plain white. • Ties must be worn correctly. • Hairstyles must be appropriate, as must hair fasteners / accessories. Extremes of hairstyle, hair colour and hair length are unacceptable • School shoes should be plain black, waterproof and contain no logos. (Training, canvas and sports shoes should be worn only for PE and when accessing the all-weather pitch). • Pupils are allowed to wear black boots to and from school in inclement weather but should change into shoes during school hours. • Pupils are permitted to wear a jacket, preferably in school colours, over their blazer during inclement weather. Pupils should remove this when they enter the school building along with hats and scarves. • Blazers must be worn when travelling to and from school, and at all times when moving around the school. They may be removed in classrooms. • Jumpers must not be tied round the waist. Hooded tops must not be worn unless they are the school supplied hooded top which can be worn as part of the sports kit. • All items of uniform and personal belongings must be clearly marked with the owner’s name. • Jewellery must be discreet and minimal. For safety reasons, one pair of stud earrings only is permitted. No more than one ring or bracelet may be worn. Facial adornments through lips, eyebrows, noses or tongues are not permitted. • Make-up must be natural and discrete and nail-polish should be clear or light pink. • Jewellery and make-up are not permitted in Primary. The Purposes of Uniform The wearing of uniform has been strongly endorsed by the parent body and is condition of acceptance of a place in Jordanhill School. Uniform enhances a young person’s sense of belonging and ensures that no person feels isolated or can be bullied because they are “different”. Uniform moderates many of the pressures on adolescents. Its visibility encourages responsibility in the community. ✓ Uniforms take the competition out of dress ✓ Uniforms keep the focus on learning, not clothing ✓ Easy mornings for families ✓ Uniforms create a feeling of oneness and belonging. ✓ Give the public a positive impression ✓ Uniforms bring an image of success to students and teachers ✓ Safety – ‘intruders’ are easily identifiable While there are costs for parents, the wearing of uniform reduces wear and tear on other clothing, items such as blazers can be used by more than one child and it is easier for parents to resist demands for expensive designer clothing. A lack of uniform in a school accentuates social and economic differences. Variations on standard uniform are agreed for a wide variety of reasons relating to medical conditions, religious beliefs, additional support needs, gender orientation or any protected characteristic. It is important that the needs of an individual are well understood and the implications of variations are explored with a young person and parents so that appropriate support mechanisms are in place.
