WE CENTRAL UNITED VS. NORTH SHORE UNITED SUNDAY 16th JULY 2017 – KICK OFF 2PM CHATHAM CUP LAST 16 KIWITEA STADIUM, SANDRINGHAM OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OPPOSITION: CENTRAL UNITED TOM SPEERS – HEAD COACH I'm definitely looking forward to this weekend! One thing surprised me being involved in football in NZ, was that there is only 1 cup competition! But as there is only one, everyone, including myself, get really up for it and that will be no different this Sunday. Against a strong team in Central, we know the big challenge that awaits us, they are essentially a national league side with some fantastic players, but on the day it is 11v11 and on our day anything can happen. So firstly I hope that we are competitive and give them a good game but the winner in me, knows we are going there for only one thing, to try our hardest to make sure North Shore is in the next round. NORTH SHORE UNITED Sunday 16th July 2pm Kiwitea Street Our 2017 Chatham cup campaign began with the ultimate goal to claim a record 7th Chatham cup. We started with a comfortable win against Metro at home, that saw us on the road to Hamilton to take on Claudelands on a rainy day which saw us run out winners 5-1. Our third round tie saw us travelling once again down to face Matamata on another rainy day, we came out winners once again in a scrappy game 2-0. In the next much anticipated round we have drawn one of the power houses of Auckland football; Central United away. This is the furthest we have gone in 9 years, and funny enough it was against Central in the 2007 Quarter final which we unfortunately lost. This time round we will hope to defy the odds and move into another quarter final in NZ’s most prestigious football cup. We hope we can get massive support for this game as the boys have worked extremely hard to get this far. COYS!! Ben Wall, Assistant Coach Winners 1986 Top Left to right then bottom left to right - (Darryl MCKellon, Kevin Hagan, Keith Hobbs, Brian McKeown, Justin Worsley, Chris Hardy, Brian Mitchell, Lee Green, Matthew Jackson, Alan Parkin, Duncan Cole, Alan Gilchrist, Kim Wright) celebrating lifting the Chatham Cup, 1986. We spoke to Alan Parkin on the great achievement of winning the Chatham Cup in 1986. ‘The year before we got beaten in the Chatham Cup Final (1985) against the relegated side of Napier which was very disappointing. They beat us 2-1 at Mt. Smart so to get back into the final the year after was very exciting to right the wrongs from the year before.’ NSU win 5-2 on Aggregate ‘We lost the 1st leg against Mt. Maunganui at the Fuji Stadium (now known as Allen Hill Stadium) which was televised. They were trialing the potential of a 2 legged final which was lucky for us as we lost 1-0 and Kevin Hagan (pictured) missed a penalty!’ Don Jones was the coach at the time and regardless of the fact we didn’t train on either scheduled days (Tues/ Thurs) we managed a 20 minute session before we headed down to Mt. Maungaui for the 2nd leg. We had a few good experienced lads combined with youth players and Don had the Alan Parkin happy about the cup knack of getting the team success to play well. Due to the lack of technology, the 2nd leg wasn’t to be televised but along with our experience and youth we beat them 4-1 to bring the cup back to the Shore.’ ‘Lifting the trophy was great for me me because we were beaten the year before by Napier and we had a really good side that year.’ Kevin Hagan Kevin Hagan, happy despite missing a penalty In the 1st leg.
