Annexure - I : Census of India 2001 - Houselist Schedule 455-456 2. Annexure - II : Census of India 2001 - Household Schedule 457-458 (iv) Preface he 2001 Census is the 14th Census of India as reckoned from the year of first Census in 1872 and the T6th Census after Independence and 1st in this millennium. After concluding the enumeration in Andhra Pradesh on 5th March, 200 1, Provisional Census Figures were quickly compiled, tabulated and published in Paper-l of 2001 for making them available to the Government Departments and various data users. The Primary Census Abstract popularly known as PCA in Census terminology contains the basic population data along with economic activities. A quantum leap was made in the technology front while processing the 2001 Census data both for Houselisting and Population Enumeration. The schedules for both the phases were scanned through high speed scanners in Data Centre and hand written data from the schedules were converted into digitized form through Intelligent Character Reading (ICR) software for creation of ASCII records for further processing. After quick processing of the data in computers, the PCA was generated at village level for the rural areas and Town/Ward level for the urban areas. The PCA data i.e. population figures in the form of hard and soft copies were made available to the data users. The General Population Tables based on full count are presented in Part II-A and Part II-B. The present Volume viz. Part II-A General Population Tables contains the basic Census data of the 2001 Census. The data are presented in 4 Tables viz., Table A-I : Number of Villages, Towns, Households, Population and Area, Table A-2 : Decadal Variation in Population Since 1901, Table A-3 : Villages by population size Class and Table A-4 : Towns and Urban Agglomerations Classified by Population size Class in 2001 with variation since 1901. Each Table is preceded by a fly-leaf which explains the concepts used, the contents of the table and the scope of data presented. Some inset tables, maps and charts have also been included in this volume to enhance the utility of the publication. The Census Operations is such a gigantic exercise that no single person can possibly lay claim to the credit in this. I acknowledge my gratitude to the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Heads of the Departments and their staff including the people of Andhra Pradesh for their full and ever lasting co-operation in making the 2001 Census a success. I must record my deep sense of gratitude to Shri Devender Kumar Sikri, Additional Secretary & Registrar General, India for his valuable guidance. I am thankful to Dr. D. Roy Choudhury, Deputy Registrar General (C&T), Shri Jagan Lal, Deputy Director (Census Division) and all officers of the Office of the Registrar General, India for their valuable help at every stage in bringing out this publication.
