It provides new citizens with free legal consultation and protects their legal rights by legal means throughout the year. * Employment Bus The Home of New Citizens has cooperated with 12 registered large-sized enterprises, and the community arranges new citizens to take buses for free to visit various factories, asking information about the welfare and employment prospect. * New Citizens’ Library The New Citizens’ Library provides more than 8,000 books and magazines of all kinds to new citizens for reading as a “mobile library”. * Home The Home of New Citizens has run a semimonthly newspaper Home, with four columns each issue, covering news, laws, daily life and inner voice. The positions of editor, correspondent, and writer are all held by new citizens, and the contents of the articles are about new citizens’ life, safety, education and work. The copies of each issue will be delivered to new citizens by volunteers. Elderly 65+ years: Plan to improve elders’ balance function Exercise with a walking stick, Taiji softball, Taiji sword, Taiji boxing and diabolo, etc. Basis: Study of traditional Chinese medicine shows that the five sports, namely, exercise with a walking stick, Taiji softball, Taiji sword, Taiji boxing and diabolo, are helpful for improving the balancing function of the elderly.By doing these five exercises, the elders will have their body parts such as head, back, waist and legs exercised, improve the cardiopulmonary function. And by coordinating the movements of hands, feet and the head, it will help prevent senile dementia and lose weight. 3 Barrier-free family Since June 2008, Shinan District has funded the installation of handrail in the bathrooms of 382 poverty-stricken elderly households and suggested elderly households, if it’s permitted financially, install by themselves; as to families whose bathroom is not fit for handrail installation, they are recommended to make use of washing machines and walking sticks, etc. to reduce the risk of slippery of the elderly. Legal services for safeguarding the rights of the elderly The Legal Service Center for the Elderly is set up and the rights safeguarding hotline is launched to provide legal aid for the elderly by respecting the principle of prioritizing the elderly-involving cases. Daytime care for the elderly 65 daytime care centers for the elderly have been set up in the district, offering comprehensive daytime care services including noon break, entertainment, fitness and health care for free. Ten elderly dining rooms are set up in the district, providing a lunch of two meat dishes, one vegetable dish and one kind of soup per day. Health training for the elderly Courses on safety, health, regimen and psychology are provided through community classes of the University for the Elderly, to improve the ability of the elderly in health reservation. Health records and health care at home Since 2010, citizens aged above 65 in the community have been entitled to free medical examination and health records. Health records and the “health care at home” program have been established for sick senior citizens. Services including health education, screening and monitoring of chronic diseases of senior citizens have been offered to reduce or postpone the occurrence and development of geriatric diseases. Apartments for the elderly Since 2010, the district government has invested over RMB200 million to fulfill the renovation of two apartment buildings for the elderly, namely, Lewanjia Apartment for the Elderly in Zhanshan and another on Jintan Road.
