Welcome to the 2015 Convention and Annual Meeting of the New York Central System Historical Society. And welcome to Utica, New York, the “Crossroads of New York” in the historic and beautiful Mohawk Valley. Without Utica and the other cities that grew up along the Mohawk River, there never would have been a New York Central Railroad – never would have been a Water Level Route. “You can sleep!” Central’s famous slogan proclaimed, with implications that a good night’s sleep would be unthinkable on any other New York-Chicago carrier, and that such a trip might even be dangerous. So pay homage to the Mohawk Valley as we celebrate the 45th anniversary year of the New York Central System Historical Society here in Utica. Convention Chairman Dick Barrett and his committee have lined up a wonderful array of activities for you, many right here in the historic Utica Hotel. But I also urge you to do a little touring. You might want to visit the former NYC passenger stations at Little Falls, Rome, or Syracuse. If you head east to Little Falls, you might want to look for the spot where the 5315 met her doom on the night of April 19, 1940. If you go west to Rome, you might want to check out the Fort Stanwix National Monument, and if you go as far west as Syracuse, you will want to take a look at DeWitt Yard. Of course Saturday’s ride up Dr. Webb’s railroad into the Adirondack wilderness to Thendara will be a most remarkable experience for us all, and Saturday evening’s keynote address by noted rail historian John Taibi is certain to be entertaining as well as enlightening. My thanks go to NYCSHS Director Dick Barrett and to all on his 2015 Convention Committee for planning this wonderful gathering, to all of our presenters and hosts, and to you for your participation and continued support of the NYCSHS.
