BOARD SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT REPORT JANUARY 29, 2015 SPECIAL REPORT TO THE PUBLIC Trustee Maria Nieto Senour, on behalf of the Board and Chancellor Carroll, presented Trustee Grosch with a plaque honoring his service as Board President. Trustee Senour thanked her colleagues for selecting her as the new Board President, and she also provided a synopsis of the many positive changes happening at the District and the campuses. Trustee Mary Graham reported that she attended the Community College League of California (CCLC) Legislative Conference and thanked Student Trustee Olivia Light for her efforts in representing students during the legislative meetings. Mary Graham Trustee Peter Zschiesche extended an invitation to the Board and Chancellor Carroll to Rich Grosch (executive vice president) tour the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Community Center, Bernie Rhinerson Maria Nieto Senour, Ph.D. (president) and visit a transitional housing facility near City College. He shared that he also attended Peter Zschiesche the CCLC Legislative Conference, where he was pleased to see the bipartisan support for community colleges shown by local legislators. He discussed his participation in CHANCELLOR various Martin Luther King, Jr. events, and acknowledged efforts to increase the diversity Constance M. Olivia Light Chancellor Constance Carroll reported that the California Community Colleges Board of Governors approved proposals from 15 colleges and authorized them to offer bachelor’s degrees as part of the pilot program under SB 850. She indicated that Mesa College was on the list of approved programs for its Health Information Management bachelor’s degree and complimented Mesa President Pamela Luster and her team for developing a winning proposal. Dr. Carroll and Senator Marty Block attended the Board of Governors meeting in Sacramento where they both received special awards for their work on the baccalaureate initiative. Dr. Carroll reported that she served on a panel with Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Workforce Partnership CEO Peter Callstrom to discuss the Mayor’s BOARD OF TRUSTEES workforce training task force, which the Chancellor co-chairs. She also reported that SAN DIEGO spring semester enrollment is up by 3.4% and that the District is on track for an overall COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT increase of 2%. Chancellor Carroll concluded with sharing her report with 3375 CAMINO DEL RIO SOUTH Communications and Public Relations Director Jack Beresford who introduced the SAN DIEGO, CA 92108-3883 District’s new Digital Communications Specialist, Char Cook. 619-388-6957 Student Trustee Olivia Light shared that student government representatives from City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges participated in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, and are planning to hold a Student Senate for California Community Colleges Region X Follow us on: legislative training retreat at Mesa College on February 27. She also observed that the new Student Center opened and Club Rush events are scheduled at City College, and Black History Month events are scheduled at Miramar College. MARCH 2015 • Approved and adopted Board Policy: BP 1200 District Mission (first reading 12/11/14); Su M T W Th F S conducted the first reading of Board Policy: BP 3105 Academic Accommodations and Disability Discrimination for Students with Disabilities, following comments by Vice 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Chancellor of Student Services Lynn Neault with approval to proceed with the next steps 8 9 10 11 13 14 of review; adopted a resolution regarding compensation of members of the Board of 12 Trustees; and authorized the appointment of Trustee Advisory Council members: Martha 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 Rañón, Ralph Dimarucut, and Carol Kim. 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 • Approved new or revised courses and programs, with comments by Interim Vice Chancellor of Instructional Services Shelly Hess; authorized agreements with health care 29 30 31 agencies for use of clinical facilities by students enrolled in District health occupations programs; authorized a one-year agreement to establish an Accelerated College Program APRIL 2015 and a two-year agreement involving the dual enrollment partnership between the San Diego Unified School District and Miramar College. BOARD SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT REPORT FEBRUARY 19, 2015 SPECIAL REPORT TO THE PUBLIC Trustee Rich Grosch shared a recent TIME magazine article that took exception to President Barack Obama’s proposal of free tuition for community college students and reviewed some of the best practices for student success in basic skills. He requested a report from the chancellor on what the District is currently doing regarding student success with further discussions to take place.
