voyage of the dawn treader Chapter 13&14 RECAP Edmund & Lucy (LWW) and their cousin Eustace get sucked into Narnia through an old painting of a ship. They join King Caspian and Reepicheep on a voyage to reach the end of the world and rescue 7 banished Lords. On the Lone Islands, the groups escapes slavery and ind the irst lord (Bern) - make him Duke of the land. On the next stop (Dragon island), Eustace turns into a dragon and must be saved and made new by Aslan. It also appears that the second lord (Octesian) died on this island. At Deathwater Island the group narrowly escapes a pool that turns anything it touches into gold (Lord Restimar was not so fortunate). They then land on an island full of invisible dwarf monopods. Lucy eventually Iinds a spell that helps return them to visibility. She then meets Aslan who introduces her to the magician Coriakin. They then sail to the dark island where dreams come true. They rescue Lord Rhoop and are saved by Alsan in the form of an albatross. CHAPTER 13: THE THREE SLEEPERS * What are your 8irst reactions to this chapter? * Why did the 3 Lords of Telmarine 8ight? (One wanted to go back, one wanted to stay, one wanted to go on) Who was right? Dante’s Purgatorio (Inverted quest to reach heaven guided by the sun - Stars none has ever seen - towers thought to be giants. In the Purgatorio, each level Dante encounters deals with one of the 7 deadly sins.) Lust - Lone Islands (Bern) Gluttony - Ramandu’s Island (“Mustard”) Sloth - Ramandu’s Island (“Sit down and end our days”) Wrath - Ramandu’s Island (Knife) Greed/Avarice - Dragon Island (Octesian) Sadness (Envy) - Voices/Dark Island (Lucy & Rhoop) Vainglory - Deathwater Island (Restimar) * What is the table that the 3 Lords are sitting at called? * (Aslan’s Table) And what is on the table? (Food/Drinks & The Knife by Which He Died) Does this remind you of another similar kind of table? (The Lord’s table - where we have a meal and are nourished but also reminded of the death of our Savior. Eating in an unworthy manner - 1 Corinthians 11:30 – That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have (fallen asleep). But not a perfect 1 to 1 analogy. They drink to the girl not Aslan.) * The second sleeper states, “We are men and Telmarines, not brutes. What should we do but seek adventure after adventure? We have not long to live in any event. Let us spend what is left in seeking the unpeopled world behind the sunrise”. Is this right or wrong? (Right in some sense - life is not about mere survival, but it is also wrong in a sense - duties in life bind us to certain responsibilities.) * How can they know that this girl is trustworthy? (They can’t. They have to trust their instincts in some regard. Believe based on the evidence they have not disbelief on evidence they don’t. Theism vs. Atheism) * How might the girls famous statement “You can’t know. You can only believe—or not” be applicable in our daily walk with the Lord? (Providential events - was that the Lord? You can’t know…Absolute certainty is the absence of faith. Walk by faith and not by sight.) * Does this girl have a thing for Caspian? CHAPTER 14: THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE WORLD * What are your 8irst reactions to this chapter? * What makes Ramandu get younger? (Fruit from the sun) How does he get this fruit? (Birds who live on the sun bring it to him each morning and lay it on his tongue) Is this reminiscent of anything? (The seraphim brining the coal of puriIication and laying it on the tongue of Isaiah. Lewis clearly meant to invoke this image because he says the object “looked like a little fruit, unless it was a little live coal”) What are some of the differences in these two accounts? (Isaiah is being puriIied of sin while Ramandu is being made young again. Isaiah is being called by God for service while Ramandu is being refreshed at the end of his service. Isaiah is in the presence of God and Ramandu is not) Why invoke this image then? * Eustace is surprised by the personhood of Ramandu. He then claims that “in our world, a star is a hug ball of 8laming gas”. Why is this incorrect? (Reducing something to its parts is not what makes it what it is. A human being is more than just a collection of bones and tissues. Eustace is participating in materialistic reductionism—the philosophical position that everything can be reduced to, and explained as, the sum of its material components) What other things in the world are people prone to reduce to only its parts? (‘religion is only psychological, justice only self-protection, politics only economics, love only lust, and thought itself only cerebral biochemistry.’ Lewis comments that those who look at the world in this way see “all the facts but not the meaning”) Does this mean we should see some sort of personality in everything? * What would be different if we viewed the stars like the ancients did - as a beings who are participating in an eternal dance rather than parts of a machine who just do what they are programmed to do? * Who is right about the stars - the ancients or the moderns? (Neither technically. Both are merely models. They are taking things in our world and using them to explain things beyond us.) * “If, as Lewis suggests, our world has lost something by reductionist thinking, which maintains that everything can be reduced to matter and energy, how can this viewpoint be reversed?” * Who do stars sometimes represent? (Angels - even in the Bible) * How is Ramandu different than Coriakin? (Ramandu completed his service while Coriakin is being disciplined) Why don’t we get to know more about Coriakin’s disobedience? * How does Caspian convince the men to join him in completing the quest? (He appeals to their pride. Participation is a privilege not an obligation - Mark Twain…) * What do we learn about the spiritual life through Reepicheep’s famous monologue (213)? (“I have decided to follow Jesus - no turning back.” I will pursue Him with all that I am no matter what may come, even death itself. He is what I have always longed for and He is worth of my every pursuit.) * Why do you think Lewis had Pittencream left behind? * Does this girl have a thing for Caspian?
