With our 2012-2015 strategic plan in full flight and a vision to connect with and inspire our listeners, our online community and our membership, our aim was clear. And we certainly didn’t disappoint. The year started off on a high with the Decade of Dance, a week long ‘blast from the past’ celebration of Fresh 92.7’s 10 years of broadcasting 24/7. We also celebrated our 15th birthday in style, reaching a capacity crowd at HQ and generating upwards of $60,000 in ticket sales. But we didn’t stop there. We hosted the Fresh Race Day at Morphettville Racecourse complete with our very own horse race and TV commercial. Then to top things off we celebrated the Top 92 of All Time – the best 92 songs ever as voted by you. Our 15th birthday offered the perfect opportunity to look back on all that we have achieved over the past decade and a half. In 1997 the concept of Fresh was born by three teenagers with a vision. A vision to create a radio station for the youth of Adelaide. A radio station that was run by youth for youth. A radio station that played the best dance music. In 1998 that vision became a reality when Fresh started broadcasting. We shared the frequency with Radio Televisione Italia and could only broadcast after 4pm but this didn’t dissuade our listeners and by 2003 Fresh was broadcasting 24 hours a day. Fresh is now the most listened to community broadcaster in South Australia with 15% of the Adelaide population (aged over 15) tuning in every week. Per capita Fresh has more listeners than any other mainland community station in Australia, an amazing achievement. Including the commercial stations Fresh sits seventh in the Adelaide market, above Cruise and Triple J. Fresh has a new studio and technology and equipment that rivals the commercial stations. We have expanded our team of permanent staff to increase our capabilities both commercially and in the community. We have over 200 members whose enthusiasm and dedication make this all possible. We have a professional board with a diverse range of skills and industry experience who generously volunteer their time. Our online community is impressive too. During the Top 92 of All Time Countdown we cracked 35,000 likes on our Facebook page and trended on Twitter. Our new website is set to increase traffic and focusing our capabilities in the social media scene is going to be huge. But with all this success we have not lost sight of the vision of our founding members. And this is what we are most proud of. It’s what unites us with our listeners. It’s what makes the future of Fresh so incredibly exciting and it’s the reason why Fresh will always be more than just a radio station but a way of life. 2 Andrew Sullivan Vice Chairperson’s Report 2013 Welcome to Fresh 92.7’s 2012-2013 Annual Report, an opportunity to celebrate all things Fresh over the past twelve months. A snapshot of the year that was... 15th Birthday Bash, Fresh Race Day, Royal Adelaide Show, refreshed website, record membership levels, completed construction of the voice-over studio, successfully ran several OB’s throughout the year and we are now the most listened to community radio station in South Australia! It’s nearly been a year since compulsory membership was introduced at Fresh and already we have achieved the largest number of members in our 15 year history! Our current membership stands at 213 members, a cracking achievement. A massive congratulations to those dedicated Fresh members who have relocated to all parts of Australia in their quest to secure full time employment and further their careers within the media fields. It’s great to see Fresh give its members opportunities to build their skill sets with hands on practical experience. Fresh have thrown some pretty amazing parties and events over the last year, a big thank you to Troy Sincock, Darren Pike, Gina Ankerson, Jessie Mattner, Erin Wimshurst, Tracy Fisher, Lisa D’Andrea, Will Bressington, Dana Johnson, Tamzin Buchan & Kristy Birkett for all of their efforts in organising and ensuring these events were highly successful! Our sales team impressively lead by Darren Pike, continue to hit their sales targets, bringing in new clients and promoting Fresh 92.7 to the wider Adelaide business community. A big thank you to fellow Board members – Alicia Kinlay, Marcus Staker, Steve Olech, Billie-Jo Barbara, Jeff Heysen, Alex McKenzie & Troy Sincock for all of their efforts behind the scenes is setting the strategy for Fresh so that we can be around for a further 15 years! Also a big thank you to former Chairman Talis Evans & former Deputy Chairperson Alicia Foreman who stepped down from their Board roles at last year’s AGM, their contributions over many years are greatly appreciated. Events to keep a look out for – The Fresh Future Fund are in the process of organising one of SA’s biggest breakfast debates with the Premier Jay Weatherill and Opposition Leader Steven Marshall going head to head to tackle questions about youth and state affairs, scheduled for early December 2013, keep an ear out for further information! 3 Troy Sincock General Manager’s Report 2013 The 2012/13 financial year was a period of transition for Fresh 92.7; a turning point. For 15 years we’ve been driven by enormous passion, determination, creativity and resourcefulness. With these things we have achieved remarkable results. McNair Ingenuity confirmed Fresh 92.7 has the largest market share of any community radio station in the country. Cast your mind back to the time when three young guys decided they’d try to start a radio station. Never in their wildest dreams could they have considered this possible. It is truly extraordinary. But this is only the beginning. We are seeking to transcend the stereotypical perception of ‘community radio’ and deliver the station’s full potential. Ultimately the success of Fresh 92.7 is only limited by our imagination…..so, we’re thinking big. The Board has remained consistent and focused over the past year and with their support we’ve assisted in resourcing the station to ensure Fresh 92.7 has the structure it needs to grow into the future. While some people who contributed a great deal to the station have moved on in pursuit of other opportunities we have been fortunate that their work has provided a springboard from which we can make great strides forward. We’re focused on employing talented people who inherently understand the station vision and fit our culture. Director Of Sales Darren Pike has built a strong Sales team who’re focused on developing relationships, delivering results and maximising the value from our station’s low clutter sponsorship environment. The inroads made in this area have been outstanding, almost immediately improving the station’s cash position. The initiative to reinstate compulsory membership once more was received positively and in the spirit intended – to ensure the membership is well represented as a whole and every volunteer participant in our service has a say in the future of Fresh 92.7. We have streamlined the membership process so those considering involvement with Fresh 92.7 are clear about the skills we require and the opportunities to contribute. More than ever before we’re drawing on the enormous abilities and experience of our people to meet the station’s objectives and assist with professional development in areas that increase their value for future employment in the radio industry and other media. Staff and key Members have been working on growing their respective departments, creating structure, processes and procedures. We have facilitated training with industry professionals in areas such as presentation, news reading and social media to educate and empower Members. Our
