Koehler INTRODUCTION This publication lists 949 persons working on or actively interested in the insects of the Pacific area. It gives the address of each and a statement regarding his interests or specialties. Both of these are indexed at the end of the directory. The first published list of entomologists of the Pacific area was prepared by the Standing Committee on Pacific Entomology of the Pacific Science Association and mimeographed at Bernice P. Bishop Museum in December 1955, under the direction of Dr. J. Linsley Gr'essitt, chairman of the committee. Supplements to that list were made in April 1956, June 1958, and March 1961. In all of these the names were arranged by countries of residence. The present publication lists the names in alphabetical sequence, the country and institution with -which each is affiliated being indicated in the Residence index. Much assistance in preparing this revised directory has been received from the entomologists of Bishop Museum, especially Miss Setsuko Nakata, Administra tive Assistant to the Chairman of the Museum's Entomology Department. Bishop Museum has developed close cooperation with many specialists on groups of insects found in the Pacific region during more than forty years. No one institution can have specialists on all groups of insects and other land arthropods; and specialists can have access to extensive collections largely through inter-institutional loans. This form of cooperation became international in scope in the 1920's when Bishop Museum worked with the British Museum in producing Insects of Samoa. It con tinued with reports on insects collected by the Pacific Entomological Survey (1929 -1932), the Mangarevan Expedition (1934),, the Guam insect survey (1936), the Micronesian Expedition (1936), expeditions to Samoa and Fiji (1937 and 1940), and a number of other collections received prior to World War II. Following that war, cooperative research expanded greatly in working up the insects of Micronesia, under the direction of Dr. Gressitt, which led to extensive investigations in Mela nesia, Indonesia, Southeastern Asia, and Antarctica, supported by grants from U.S. government agencies. We are well aware of the possibilities of errors and omissions in this publi cation. During its compilation, a postal card was addressed to each person whose name we had, asking for additions and corrections. It also stated: "If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you are no longer interested and you will not be included in the list. " Through oversight, this may have led to the omission of some persons who should have been included. We should be glad to learn of others whose names should appear in future revisions. A copy of this directory is being sent to every person listed in it. What is desired in return is that the Pacific Scientific Information Center be kept informed as to changes of address and interest and, if you think well of the following outlined plan, that we be provided with other information which might be helpful. PROPOSED NEWSLETTER in order to keep in touch with persons working on or actively interested in entomological subjects, with special reference to the Pacific area, it has been proposed that a newsletter with some such title as "Entomologists in the Pacific" be issued. This would present information on current research, collecting, and other activities, resulting publications, and changes of address and interests. Copies of publications sent to the Center could be reviewed, and requests, queries, and problems could be interchanged. All this would help to keep Pacific entomologists in touch with each other, and also to keep the directory up-to-date. If persons sympathetic with these objectives will cooperate, the Center will undertake the compilation, publication, and distribution of such a Newsletter. Please let us hear from you. We would also be glad to receive copies of your publications. ^ Edwin H. Bryan, Jr., Manager Pacific Scientific Information Center Bernice P.
