DHM 3533: Textile Surface Design page 1 Fall 2019 COURSE, MEETINGS DHM 3533: Textile Surface Design Tuesday, Thursday 1:30-3:50 pm Human Sciences 001 3 credits INSTRUCTOR Dr. Adriana Petrova Office: 429A Human Sciences [email protected] Office phone: 405.744.5035 Note: Will respond within 24 hours Office hours: T 12-1pm, W 1-2pm, or by appointment excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays COURSE DESCRIPTION Prerequisite(s): DHM 1003 and 2573. Traditional and contemporary dyeing, printing, stitching, and other textile surface manipulation techniques are practiced in a portfolio of individual projects. Exercises in color theory and production inform textile design work. Aesthetic, methodological, and environmental tradeoffs are considered in relation to designing textile surfaces TEXTBOOK Required: Irwin, Kimberly A., Surface Design for Fabric, Bloomsbury, 1st Edition, 2015 COURSE OBJECTIVES Through completion of this class students are expected to: Apply principles of design and color theory to develop textile designs. Learn basic techniques of textile surface manipulation: block printing, stenciling, tied and stitched resist dyeing, batik, screen printing, silk painting, needlework techniques such as stitchery, macramé, crochet, knitting. Be able to execute a textile design using a appropriate surface manipulation techniques in desired (matching the design) colors. Develop portfolio of digital and manual textile surface design work. Produce yardage of fabric, applying surface design techniques practiced in class. MODE OF TEACHING Instruction will be given in the beginning of the class period. Exercises and work on individual projects will follow. ATTENDANCE & PREPARATION Attendance and active participation in class activities is crucial to this course. Class time is to be utilized only for course-related work. Use of cell phones and other communication devices (unless used strictly for class content related activities) distracts from class participation and time utilization, therefore, use of these devices in class will not be allowed: texting, emailing, chatting, internet browsing etc. will not be tolerated. Attendance will be taken. Absences may be excused with proper documentation (a verifiable DHM 3533: Textile Surface Design page 2 Fall 2019 signed note stating the reason for the absence, the dates/times of absence, numbers of days away from school, and contact person). If an absence is excused, it may extend a due date of an assignment/project. If you cannot attend class, inform the instructor as soon as possible and submit your documentation within a week of returning to school. Each student is allowed one unexcused absence. Additional unexcused absences will decrease the final grade at a rate of 2% per additional absence. If a student misses cumulatively more than 3 weeks of class (6 absences) for any reason, they will not be able to pass the class. Class activities cannot be made up. Class instruction will not be repeated outside of class. Students are responsible for finding out what they missed while absent and what work/assignments they need to complete. GRADING Evaluation criteria will be given for each assignment. Progress on certain assignments will be checked and counted towards a project’s grade. Assignments will be due at the beginning of class on the dates specified in the schedule. Working on the assignment during class on the day of the submission is not allowed. Unless an extension has been granted due to an excused absence, late submissions are not allowed, except for one. The late submission will be penalized by 10% off the assignment’s grade for each 24-hour period past the deadline. Late work will not be accepted after the 7th day past the deadline. Any class presentations of assignments and in-class assignments cannot be made up. It is expected that in their work students will strive for and demonstrate professionalism both as content and as working practices (e.g. diligence, punctuality, integrity). GRADE DISTRIBUTION See attachment EXPECTATIONS Lab safety procedures are to be observed at all times. Please check your email and Canvas site regularly (daily) for class announcements. No food and drinks are allowed in the classroom. Cell phone use is not permitted during class. If a student missed a class, it is student’s responsibility to find out from a classmate what material was taught and what announcements were made. Visitors are not allowed in the classroom. Cell phone use is not permitted during class. Professional conduct is required at all times. Students are responsible for picking up their projects in a timely manner. Projects, which are not picked up by January 17, 2020, will become property of the department and may be discarded.
