The Lottery was created in April 1985 pursuant to authority granted by the West Virginia Legislature with gaming operations beginning in January 1986. Since that time, the Lottery has generated nearly $10 billion in gaming revenue for the State of West Virginia with proceeds supporting education, seniors and tourism.
