While the southern portion of the campus was recently rebuilt for continued hospital use (including a museum), the northern portion has remained largely vacant and includes this iconic landmark building. This field school class was part of a hands-on five-day immersive experience for students entering the historic preservation graduate program at the UO. “We worked in small groups cleaning and repointing a section of the home’s historic flagstone patio and stairs. It was exciting to have so many people with a passion for historic preservation in the same place,” commented Rea. “ We deeply appreciate the craftsmanship that Tim provided, and I know that the students not only had fun but learned an amazing amount. It’s refreshing to know that old school craftsman still exists and are willing to share.” Our pro bono contributions to the UO Watzek House were ~George Bleekman, Owner’s rep, University of Oregon led by Timothy Rea, a 24-year Pioneer employee with both Timothy Rea a passion and extensive experience in Historic Register building restorations. Tim is one of the few craftsmen on the west coast to have completed the Historic Preservation Certificate Program at the International Training Center near Washington, D.C. Pioneer’s Matt Botts Wins National Built in 1936, the National Historic Craftsman Award Register Aubrey R. Watzek House was designed by noted architect John Yeon (at just 24 yrs. old) and considered a major regional statement of Modern Architecture not long after its completion. The residence is now part of the University of Oregon’s John Yeon Center for Architecture, and is used as a special event facility.
