Ground Rules Packet Acknowledgements The development of the "Unity in Diversity" curriculum consumed much of my creative energy over a period of two years. During that time, I had the encouragement and support of many people. My husband and colleague, Dr. Michael Bopp, assisted from the inception of the project by acting as both a catalyst and a mirror as I struggled to conceptualize the principles for an effective multicultural program and then to translate them into practical exercises for the classroom. What I most appreciated, thought, was his unwavering support and endless faith in me. Barbara Dudley was my patient partner in the process of turning a manuscript into a finished document. Her skills with our word processing equipment and her faith that the innumerable revisions would someday end were an invaluable asset. Other staff members of the Four Worlds Project who provided technical support to the development of this guide are listed on the credit page. My thanks to them as well. Susan McCallum served as artist to the project. She provided over eighty original drawings and went well beyond the scope of our contract. She put in countless extra hours of research and planning and proved to be an enthusiastic partner in a project which she felt had the capacity to reach students like the ones in her community. I am grateful to her for her inspiring work as well as her friendship over the months we struggled to crystalize our vision of what the curriculum could be. Patti Morris captured the essential theme of the curriculum in the cover drawing entitled "The Hoop of Many Hoops." Her work is always first class. Dr. Richard Butt of The University of Lethbridge inspired me with his own contributions to the field of multicultural education. His articles on this topic helped me refine my model and his thorough and patient review of one of the early drafts of my manuscript helped me achieve greater consistency. I am also grateful to Richard for agreeing to act as my Masters project supervisor. In that capacity he demonstrated both flexibility and ingenuity as we negotiated the review and approval process. Phil Lane, on the Faculty of Education at The University of Lethbridge and Coordinator of the Four Worlds Development Project, inspired me with his vision of a multicultural society which thrives on the diverse contributions of many human groups. His tireless efforts to bring to life Black Elk's vision of the earth as a "hoop of many hoops" are evident in both his professional and personal life. Phil also served as a member of my Masters committee. Other members of my committee were Kaz Mazurek from the Faculty of Education and Keith Parry from the Anthropology Department. My thanks to both of them for the time they took to review my work and for the valuable suggestions they made about how we can take the ideas a step further. Four Worlds Development Project The University of Lethbridge 4401 University Drive Lethbridge, Alberta Canada T1K 3M4 he Four Worlds Development Project is the result of many people's efforts and wisdom. T Some were directly involved, while others inspired us through their work in the fields of education, human and community development, health promotion and substance abuse. Direction for this project was first set at a historic council held in Lethbridge, Alberta in December, 1982. Participants at the council were Native elders, cultural leaders and profes sionals from various communities across North America who gathered to address the root causes of Native alcohol and drug abuse. It was this gathering that gave birth to the Four Worlds Development Project. In February of 1987, many of the elders and cultural leaders who participated in the original council, reinforced by others (over one hundred in all), representing some 40 tribes from across North America, gathered at St. Paul's Treatment Centre on the Blood Reserve near Cardston, Alberta. They were invited to review the philosophy, guiding principles, ac tivities, and strategies for human and community development articulated and implemented by the Four Worlds Development Project during its first four years, and to give direction and guidance for the years to come. The elders and their collaborators were overwhelming in the strength of their support, approval and encouragement for all aspects of the Four Worlds Development Project. We are therefore confident in saying that the philosophy and principles the Project is based upon, as well as the processes, strategies, activities and vision of the future outlined in these docu ments, have received the full and unreserved support of the many respected Native elders and cultural leaders from across North America who attended this historic council. The contribution of these dedicated leaders was framed by their own commitment to Native people and their own, often hard won, experience. To each of them we offer our deepest respect and appreciation. It is with their continued encouragement, guidance and prayers that we proceed "toward the year 2000" with the complete faith that Mother Earth and all her people will be healed. In Recognition In appreciation for their encouragement, wisdom, and guidance, we list here the names of those Native cultural leaders and their collaborators who participated in the two historic councils which gave birth and direction to the Four Worlds Development Project.
