Marissa Guijarro The Most Southern Place on Earth: Music, History and Culture of the Mississippi Delta July 2018 Emmett Till counseling lesson for grades 9-12 This lesson will introduce the concept of intersectionality and foster empathy by learning about the murder of Emmett Till. Students will develop the following mindsets and behaviors from the American School Counseling Association: The ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Every Student Category 2: Behavior Standards Students will demonstrate the following standards through classroom lessons, activities and/or individual/small-group counseling. This is a jigsaw activity that estimates a total of 25-30 students representing a range of reading levels in the class. Each group will read one article. Counselor/teacher will check each group’s level of understanding. Milam, Mamie Till, jury) through a gallery walk activity. Students will write on post-its and affix responses. Counselor will guide discussion regarding the beliefs, feelings and ethical decision-making of each person during the gallery walk. Supplemental enrichment activity or at-home activity: Students will listen to the following songs and write a one-page reflection: Bob Dylan song, "Death of Emmett Till" with slideshow Phil Ochs, Here's to the State of Mississippi 2 .
