Construction of New Lines 953 Velankanni Railway Station, SR Conversion to Broad Gauge 1,020 Track Renewal 2,487 Electrification 2,013 kms. of IR’s route was electrified during 2016-17. Turn Over Ratio in terms of value of inventories to value of materials consumed was 9% (without fuel) and 8% (with fuel) during 2016-17 as compared to 13% (without fuel) and 11% (with fuel) during last year. The disposal of condemned Rolling Stock and scrap arising was monitored closely. Managing the Environment Efforts are steadily being made to make railway operations environment friendly and to bring down the adverse effects through adaptation of cleaner technologies, energy conservation measures, afforestation on vacant railway land, etc. As per Budget pronouncement made by Hon’ble MR in 2016-17, it has been planned to utilize Railway wasteland and rooftops for setting up solar power plants. Concerted efforts are also being continued to eliminate use of wooden sleepers. Human Resource Development A number of initiatives were taken to improve the quality of training programmes for railway employees in order to improve productivity. Train passing through green surroundings near Udupi Station (Karnataka) 6 INDIAN RAILWAYS ANNUAL REPORT AND ACCOUNTS 2016-17 Industrial Relations and Personnel As on 31st March, 2017, IR had 13,08,323 regular employees as against 13,30,283 as on 31st March, 2016 – a decrease by 21,960. Industrial Relations remained cordial during 2016-17. Productivity Linked Bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages was paid to all non-gazetted employees (excluding RPF/RPSF personnel) for 2016-17. RPF/RPSF personnel belonging to Group C and D categories were sanctioned an ad hoc bonus equivalent to 30 days’ wages. The PLB and ad-hoc bonus were Revival of 150 years old heritage step well, SCR both paid at an enhanced calculation ceiling of `7,000/- p.m. Staff Welfare IR’s welfare schemes cover a wide spectrum of activities, viz., educational facilities and financial assistance to the children of railway employees, handicraft centres for augmenting family income, financial assistance in sickness, subsidized housing and canteen facilities at work places and medical cover for employees and their families during service and after retirement.
