Dihar esow / Apologies R Lyon 2. Kovnotyansow / Minutes The minutes of the meeting on Friday 18 th July 2014 were read and agreed. 3. Materow ow sordya / Matters arising NONE 4. Arwodhow yn stret / Street signs Wych Hazel Way (Newquay) = Hyns Koll Hebleth [Recognising that the ‘Wych’ comes from the meaning ‘pliant/flexible’.] There was a general consensus at the meeting to translate this as a ‘pliable’; other suggestions included <glas> and <gwydhyn>, but these were ruled out as they may be construed as a misspelling. Avallen Close (Mylor Bridge) = Kew Avalen [Map form comes from a Unified Cornish spelling] Kennedy Close (Illogan) = Kew Kennedy [Believed to come from an English surname] Dolphin Street (Port Isaac) = Stret Morhogh <Pyffer> was also suggested, but was noted as coming from dialect. <Morhogh> is a generic name for dolphin/porpoise. K George proposed, L Jenkin seconded. Beach Road (Newquay) = Fordh an Treth [Road to the beach, therefore def. art. included.] Rally Close (Lanreath) = Kew Ralli Sandra Way (Bodmin) = Hyns Sandra Trerice Drive (Newquay) = Rosva Trerys 5. Henwyn leow / Place names Worcester (England) = Karwigoran It was decided not to merely Cornisize the Welsh form of this exonym. The name derives from the Wigoran tribe (Uuigorna 716-43). The panel settled on the form which derives from these origins and is utilised by R Lyon in his rugby tweets. a. Mappa Kernow ( 32 henwyn tylleryow gesys ) Milcombe (aka Millcombe) (Pelynt) (ST) = Kommelin It New Polzeath (St Minver) = Trebenntir K George proposed, L Jenkin seconded Rosedinnick (St Columb Major) = Rossydynek This translation is comprised the historical forms <Rossidyneke> (1315) and <Russydenek> (1344). Three Hammers (Tresmeer) = Tri Morthol Tilland (Quethiock) = Tirgonadow It was decided that the meaning of Tilland was “tillable land”. Trebartha (North Hill) = Treberthan Believed to come from <tre> (farm/homestead) + <perth> (bushes/thickets) + <an> (place-name suffix). Trebullett (Lezant) = Trebalvet Suggested use of the 1383/1397 form <Trebalvet> with the penultimate vowel mirroring the current map form. There was a possibility that this is a Norman French name (‘Balvot’ was identified as a surname during the meeting), although there was no evidence to support this correlation. Trecrogo (South Petherwin) = Trenkrugow There were discussions around whether or not to mutate as no historical forms supported it. Tregunnon (Altarnun) = Gonan Believed to come from <goon> (downland) + <an> (PN suffix). Tregurrian (Mawgan in Pydar) = Tregoryen Tregurrian Cove (Mawgan in Pydar) = Porth Tregoryen May originate from the personal name ‘Koryen’. Trehunist (Quethiock) = Trenanast Last element is unknown. <Trehunest> (1600) may mean ‘eastern Trehun’. There was a suggestion that Trehunsey (2km to the N.W.) appears to be <tre> + <hun> + <ti>, meaning ‘settlement of the dormitory’. Trekenner (Laneast) = Tregynener 2 The second element is a personal name. Trekenner (Lezant) = Tregynner The second element is a personal name. 7. Negys aral / Any Other Business a. Golowji po Golowti? The panel agreed that <golowji> would be the appropriate spelling for ‘lighthouse’. b. Lethes po West A difference was noted between directional and positional terminology with compass directions. Street signage would be more likely to utilise the positional; this would be identified by email discussion for future cases. 8. Dydh an kuntelles nessa / Date of next meeting Friday 19 th September 2014, 10am, 2N:06, NCH 3 .
