He was born in Stirlingshire , which in a sense is the core of Scotland , holding as it does - Of the Palace Fortress all its kings , Stirling Castle , and the chief battleground in its history , Bannockburn . Of his forbears but little is known . My cousin , m JOhn ston e John Hu phreys , who is well versed in m O m genealogical atters , btained recently fro the Regis Edinborou h m ter House in g , through a cursory exa ination m m f m by a e ber of its sta f , so e copies of m docu ents in the way of Wills , deeds relating to land , and extracts from parish registers . It is to be regretted that parish registers at that period were very irregularly kept , blanks constantly occurring , while at earlier periods they were not kept at all . Therefore the m aterials collected in this experimental search are fragmentary . The subject has not been looked into hl m thoroug y , nor have other possible sources of infor a m m tion been drawn upon . T o tell the story of my great- grandfather we m ust 1 700 begin with his ancestors . About the year there lived in Stirlingshire three brothers : Andrew Taylor “ ” m “ in Lag of Fintry , Willia Taylor in Craigtown ” m “ of Fintry , and Ja es Taylor of Easter The Andrew Taylor named above was the grand father of John Taylor of New York and the other - brothers were his great uncles . m Ja es , the third of these brothers , was portioner of Easter Cringate and at an early period— certainly 1750 before , but we do not know just how early - was also portioner Of the property in St . Ninians Parish called In 1 750 he owned a portion of this land , which was then known , and “ l i ” Ho e cra . perhaps still is , as g In the year just m m entioned he bought another portion , na ely, Ashen h ilhi trees , and later , still another, S e ll.
