It was conducted on the night of 30 June 1990 and included aU persons, convicted and uilconvicted, held in adult correctional institutions in all Australian jurisdictions. The tables contained in this report are largely compatible with those in the previous Census repOlis as, wherever possible, the same definitions, counting rules and tabulations have been used. The data collection form used in 1990 is identical to that us~d since 1987. The data collection Wll!; c<Hlrdinated by the National Correctional Statistics Committee, the body which is accountable to the Annual Conference of Correctional Minisiers for this and a number of other projects. Memb!.rship of this committee varies from time to time. In addition to the representatives of the Institute and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, state contributors this year were: Angela Goeta and Simon Eyland (New South Wales) Rob Eldridge, Darryl Coulthard and John Kempermnn (Victoria) BUt MUler (Queensland) Teresa Cunningham and Anne-Marie Langdon (Western Australia) Leigh Roeger (South Australia) BUt Harvey (Tasmania) Allan van Zyl and Tma S!lcea (Northern Territory) Louise Gell (Australian Capital Territory) May I express my sincere appreciation to these contributors for their c<Hlperation and willingness to negotiate complex issues. Thanks are also due to the numerous unnamed worken: in Australian corrections departments who collected and coUated the basic data, to Jennifer Hallinen who undertook much of the data editing, and to Dianne Dagger and Francois Debaeckel' who helped with the preparation of the report.
