Ar Dr Tan Loke Mun Profile Ar Dr Tan Loke Mun is a prominent award winning Architect from Malaysia. Dr Tan obtained his architectural training from Deakin University and later his doctorate from the University of Melbourne He is a member of the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM), a past President of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (2005-2007) and was the Team Leader responsible for the setting up of the GBI green rating tool for Malaysia Dr Tan is well regarded as a visionary innovator and a bit of a maverick. Bhd, DTLM Design Group and principal of DrTanLM Architect, an architectural design studio in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. He is best known for having designed the first Green Building Index Platinum rated house in Malaysia, the S11 House and its subsequent iterations the Clay Roof House and the Fabric House. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Dr Tan’s works are widely published and his practice is amongst the most awarded in the region. Malaysia became the first Asian country to implement mandatory 10 CPD points for the annual renewal of professional registration. First chairman of LAM CPD Committee from 2003-2007. 2. Chair of PAM Education Committee (1999-2001) that implemented the School Liaison meetings to bring all the Schools of Architecture together into one common meeting to address architectural education issues. Member of Council of Architectural Education (CAEM) from 1999-2001, 2003-2004. 3. President of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) from 2005-07 4. Established ARCHIDEX for PAM with CIS Network Sdn. Bhd. 5. Launched the PAM Convention comprising ARCHIDEX Exhibition, KL Design Forum and DATUM. ARCHIDEX is now Malaysia's premier architectural and interior exhibition with some 33,000 visitors (2018). DATUM has grown tremendously and is recognised as the most successful International Design Conference in the region showing the works of emerging and upcoming architects with more than 2500 participants in 2010. 6. Developed and launched Architect Centre, a joint venture between PAM with RAIA’s Archicentre Pty. Ltd. to provide building inspection services for the Malaysian building industry. The business has grown and currently provides an important and credible third party professional inspections service and opinion to the public. 7. Initiated the first Architectural Student Works Exhibition held annually at the One Utama Shopping Centre central boulevarde. The week long exhibition has grown to be a major annual event in the architectural students’ calendar. Ar Dr Tan Loke Mun 8. Appointed by the Minister of Housing and Local Government in 2009-2010 to the Committee to investigate the Jaya Supermarket building collapse during demolition. 9. Led the PAM team that developed the Green Building Index (GBI) for Malaysia. GBI is recognised as Malaysia's green building rating tool and is specifically designed for the tropics. Worked with Government to offer incentives to promote green building and also preparation of legislation for a greener environment. Achieved the first GBI Platinum rated house in Malaysia. In the first year, there were more than 100 projects that had applied for GBI certification in Malaysia. GBI at its 10 years anniversary in 2019 celebrated more than 300 million square feet of property that has been certified green by GBI. Co-edited the Greening Malaysia book published under KLAF2019 10.Worked with EPIC Communities on self help housing and community initiatives in PJKita and also on Orang Asli housing. Initiated the international Architectural Competition for the Tropical House for Orang Asli through KLAF2019 to generate appropriate housing typologies for onward engagement with Government and the Orang Asli community. 11. In 2018 initiated and started BambooArk to reintroduce the planting, cultivation, processing, preservation, design and structural use of bamboo in Malaysia. This was featured in KLAF2019. 12.Director for Kuala Lumpur Architectural Festival 2019 with the theme TOMORROW to address future issues confronting the profession and society. This was tackled under four event headings – Shelter, Future Food, Art + Architecture and Archidex + DATUM. 13.In 2008, drafted the proposal and framework for the Deposition of Architects Fees with LAM as a Stakeholder as part of the solution to address the independence of the Architect as Certifier for the Certification for Completion and Compliance (CCC). Exhibited “T- Colony” Overseas and others 1. 1987-92 Developed the Group Self Build Housing program for the State Government of Victoria, Australia as part of his PhD at Melbourne University. The housing program enables low income families caught in the deposit gap to utilize their own skills and time (sweat equity) to contribute towards building their own homes. The program, training and financing model was designed, implemented and launched in 1989 and continued to operate for many year. It was the longest running new build public housing program that was offered by the State Government of Victoria, Australia until 2016.
