RHB, Project Director GCK, Project Scientist JLC, Research Assistant INTRODUCTION This report came into being in the cour~e of other, more visible research. The Developmental Disabilities Project on Residential Services and Community Adjustment has, for the two years ending June 30, 1978 and 1979, compiled information about mentally retarded people in state-operated residential facilities. In the course of doing that, it was necessary to be clear as to the identity of the facilities in which the people were resident. Once the identifications were made, this directory became feasible. The definitions of the facilities listed here are as follows. For convenience, they are referred to as PRF/MRs and PRF/others, with the "PRF" in the designations standing for "Public Residential Facility." Actually, the facilities are only those that are state-operated; there may be other kinds of public facility that are operated by other units of government, but they would not be in this list. PRF/MR = a state-operated residential facility which is designated exclusively or primarily to serve mentally retarded people. PRF/other = a state-operated residential facility which as a whole is not designated exclusively or primarily to serve mentally retarded people, but which has ten or more residents whose primary diagnosis is mental retardation. Most PRF/others in this directory are mental hospitals by primary identity. The sources of information were the persons who, in each state, are responsible for the operation of these kinds of facilities. The original identification of the facilities began in 1978, and the lists 1 were refined in the course of soliciting the data that appear in other project reports (Krantz, Bruininks, & Clumpner, 1978; Krantz, Bruininks, & Clumpner, 19"/9). A complete listing was sent to each state informant in a two-stage verification cycle in 1979, and the lists were also verified by data managers in most states. In this directory, the states are presented in alphabetical order. For each state, the two kinds 0f facility are listed. The opening date for each facility, and ~he closing date for each former facility, are given. In a few cases, facilities planned for the future are listed. Following the directory, a table is printed which tallies the facilities for each state during the year ending June 30, 1979. 2 ALABAMA PRF/MRs Current Opened Albert P.
