Chapter 3 – Who’s Who of the American Revolution 1. Samuel Adams: American Revolutionary leader and patriot. Founder of the Sons of Liberty, led most of the resistance efforts and boycotts. 2. Abigail Adams: John Adam's wife, she appealed to her husband to protect the rights of women. 3. John Adams: One of the writers of the Declaration of Independence promoted a plan at the 2nd Continental Congress that each colony set up their own government. 4. Benedict Arnold: United States general and traitor in the American Revolution. 5. Crispus Attucks: Former slave who had become a dockworker. He was killed in Boston Massacre, only African-American person killed in Boston Massacre. First African-America to give his life for the United States. 6. Lord Charles Cornwallis: General Henry Clinton named Cornwallis commander of his troops in the southern states. 7. John Dickinson: Delaware aristocrat - wrote articles; attacked the British policy. 8. Benjamin Franklin: Writer, painter, inventor, diplomat, American Enlightenment thinker. Represented the American colonies in London and later persuaded the French to aid the colonists’ cause in the Revolution. 9. King George: leader of England during the American revolutionary war. He was blamed for the loss of the 13 colonies. 10. Nathan Hale: A soldier of the American Revolution who was hanged as a spy by the British. 11. John Hancock: American revolutionary patriot who was president of the Continental Congress. 12. Richard Henry Lee: Leader of the American Revolution who proposed the resolution calling for independence of the American colonies (1732-1794). 13. Patrick Henry: Governor of Virginia, a lawyer and great public speaker. Challenged many of the British taxes in court and won! Inspired many with his speeches, most famously “Give me liberty or give me death!” (1736-1799). 14. General Henry Lee: Soldier of the American Revolution (1756-1818). 15. General William Howe: General of a large fleet of British. 16. Thomas Jefferson: Writer of the Declaration of Independence, will declare that all people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. 3rd President of the United States. 17. Nathanial Greene: Colonial Commander in the South 18. Thomas Paine: Englishman who came to America to help the colonies. Wrote a pamphlet called “Common Sense” and helped persuade many colonists to support Independence from Britain. .
