National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) National Cheng Kung University is located in Tainan, Taiwan, and is ranked second among all the universities in Taiwan. Fees: All tuition and fees are payable in New Taiwanese Dollars only. For the purposes of this brochure we are using the current (at time of printing) exchange rate of roughly NTD:AUD =29:1. As exchange rates are subject to fluctuation, please double-check the rate before making payment. Fees are calculated on there being a minimum of ten (10) participants in the program. For study groups consisting of at least 10 students, Taiwan MOE will provide a scholarship of approx. $360USD (10,800NTD), roughly covering the cost of living/dormitory expenses for a month. 2. Additionally, the Chinese Language Center will also cover half the cost of the overnight trip (3,000NTD) for groups of 10 or more students, thus students should only incur tuition fees. 4. Every class has 4 to 8 people. - Students will be divided into 2 to 3 classes according to their placement test scores. - Taught by professional and experienced teachers of Chinese as a Second Language (CSL). - Main textbook: Far East Everyday Chinese or Practical Audio-Visual Chinese. - Hanyu pinyin Romanization and traditional characters are used as the principal written codes of instruction. However, the course can be taught using simplified characters if students prefer. - Small group tutorial classes are designed to co-ordinate with class content, and help students to solve language problems they have encountered both in and out of class. The last four weeks - 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. Every class has 6 to 10 people. - Placement test scores determine student placement in to one of eight (8) levels ranging from no Chinese language skills to advanced skills. Students come from over 50 countries. - Taught by professional and experienced teachers of CSL. - Main textbook: Practical Audio-Visual Chinese. - Huayu pinyin Romanization and traditional characters are used as the principal written codes of instruction. - Small group tutorial classes are designed to co-ordinate with class content, and help students to solve language problems they have encountered both in and out of class. Cultural Courses and Activities - 2-3 sessions per week, 2 or 3 hours per session. - Cultural Classes offered include Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, Taichi, Chinese Opera (國劇), Chinese Songs, Tea Ceremony (茶道)and Stamp Engraving(篆刻), Taiwanese Language(台語), Chinese Cuisine(美食文化). - Cultural Activities introduce topics such as Paper-cutting & Knotting (剪 紙、中國結), Foot Massage (腳底按 摩) , etc. - Speech on political and economic issues, Fortune Telling and Fengshui. Cultural and Language Exchange - One-on-one language exchange with students of National Cheng Kung University. - Interactions with student associations of National Cheng-Kung University. Cultural Excursions - Friday afternoons 4 NCKU CLC 20140825 - Taiwan Museum of Literature – oral introduction and tour of the exhibition - Tour of Tainan’s Historic Sites - Night Market, Jade Market - Local ecological reserve Local Weekend Host Families (on request) - Stay with local families for one weekend. Volunteer in local schools - Volunteer Teaching English in local Schools. Trips: Overnight trip to Hua-lian (花蓮) or Ken-ting (墾丁). Assessment: - 30% Final test, including oral and writing test. - 70% General performance , including 20% weekly tests, 20% homework, 20% class participation, and 10% attendance. - Transcript and completion certificate will be awarded to students when the program ends. • Extracurricular Activities: - Induction:Orientation and introduction to the center, tour of the campus and library, teacher-student tea party. - Farewell party 5.
