----------·--·---- [3?lJ eurostat UNEMPLOYMENT --------~- ----··-- Monthly bulletin ----··----·---------------------·- ----- ----- MONTHLY STATISTICS OF REGISTERED UNEMPLOYED IN THE COMMUNITY - November 1981 - The rise in unemployment in the Community of Nine continued during November 1981, the unemployment rate reaching 9% of the civilian working population at the end of the month. More than 9.9 million persons were registered at public employment offices, a figure 2.3 million above that of November last year. The growth in numbers unemployed in the Community of Nine in November averaged 1.4%, but the rate of increase differed very much between countries. The upward tendency noted in the R.F. of Germany in October continued, the rise during November amounting to 9.1%. The numbers registered remained fairly steady in France, Italy, Belgium and the United Kingdom. Once again male unemployment showed the greater increase, the total for the Community of Nine going up by 2.4%. However this increase amounted to + 14,0% in the F.R. of Germany, near to + 7% in Luxembourg and in Denmark and + 5,6% in the Netherlands. The unemployment rate for men calculated by reference to the civilian working popu­ lation "isgradually catching up on that for women. At the end of November 1981 this was 8.3% for men and 10.1% for women, a difference of about one fifth, while at the same period last year the respective rates were 6.1% and 8.1%, a difference of about one third. The number of registered unemployed aged under 25 years showed a slight reduction in November in France, Belgium and the United Kingdom, and remained steady in Italy. By contrast it increased slightly in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland and Denmark (monthly figures are not available for the F.R. of Germany). The sharp increase in the figures for Greece is normal for this time of year, the current figures being very close to those observed last year.
