The goal is for each school to have access to a consistent source of information to assist in the infusion of the African American experience. This month’s topic is black history in Latin America and the Caribbean. The term Afro-Latin American is used in academia to describe individuals of African ancestry living in Latin America today. According to the historian Henry Louis Gates, historically, the Caribbean an Latin America received 95% of all Africans arriving in the Americans. Countries with significant Afro-Latin American Populations include Brazil, Haiti, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Cuba, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.
