Robinson missed the entire 2020 season after his failed suicide attempt, an attempt which cost him his right eye. After recovering, Robinson returned to baseball in the San Francisco Giants' farm system. Last week, Robinson hit a home run in a triple-A game, marking a year of his progress since the attempt. "I still have a lot of work to do," Robinson said. "I know that this is a never ending battle with some dark thoughts, but I've come so far." His childhood dream was to play professional baseball. But as a child, Robinson dealt with the emotional trauma of his parents' divorce. "That caused a lot of stress. I think we had this idea of a perfect family. When it didn't live up to that, we questioned everything." His trauma included frequent mental episodes in which he talked to himself, in the first person, to remind himself that nothing would make him happy. When something would go wrong, he’d ask, 'Why is this happening?' The voice in his head would answer, 'Well, of course, it is happening. You don't get to enjoy these things,'" These issues, however, didn't hold Robinson back from establishing his dream of being a top baseball prospect. He was drafted in the 2010 by the Texas Rangers, and made the Rangers' opening day roster in 2017. Robinson then signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 but had his season cut short when he underwent elbow surgery. His suicide attempt, six months later, kept him off the baseball field for another year. His first step, in a long road back to baseball, was addressing his mental health. Robinson spent time in a psychiatric hospital and then spent the next several months in therapy. Medication and therapy became central to Robinson's new routine as he worked his way back to health. During a calculated point in his recovery, Robinson reached out to the San Francisco Giants and received a minor-league contract in October 2019. He was then introduced to a clinical psychologist who was also the Giant's assistance program director. With the psychologist’s help, Robinson became an organizational spokesperson for suicide awareness. Robinson has demonstrated the power of vulnerability and hopes to be an inspiration to others dealing with mental illness. And now, with a milestone home run now under his belt, the attention is sure to be on him. He wants to convert that attention into an awareness to help others. "How can I go through this and not find a way to try to help other people?" he said. "To have this happen and just move on with my life the way I was before? There's no way. This was a huge, painful sign telling me to help people get through something that they don't think is winnable." If you or someone you know is struggling with depression or has had thoughts of harming themselves or taking their own life, get help. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) provides 24/7, free, confidential support for people in crisis situations.
