Newsletter 2013 - 02 January 11, 2013 MAKE PLANS NOW TO ATTEND TRANSPORTATION DAY FEB. 14 West Virginians for Better Transportation will join together on February 14, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at the State Capitol to educate lawmakers about the challenges facing our state’s transportation system. The 2013 Transportation Day at the West Virginia Capitol will be held on the second day of the 60-day legislative session, and participants will have an opportunity to attend a joint session of the House and Senate transportation committees being held that day. “We have an opportunity on February 14 to educate and emphasize the importance of our transportation system and our industry to our state lawmakers,” WVBT Board Member Bob Orders, Orders Construction Company, said. “As employers, we seldom visibly band together in numbers.” CAWV members are urged to attend the event. “Here’s a chance to show up and be counted. There is no reason why every member shouldn’t have someone at Transportation Day at the Legislature on February 14,” he said. “We need a strong show of support from our CAWV members. That will send a clear message: WVBT Transportation Day is about JOBS! Our JOBS! Better JOBS!” The CAWV will provide safety vests and talking points to make our group – and our message - highly visible to lawmakers. Neighborgall IV is pleased to announce the informative line-up of speakers which has been arranged for the 2013 Midyear Meeting being held January 25-30, at the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman. “We have organized an educational program that hits all facets of the construction industry,” Chairman Neighborgall said. “The goal of the meeting is for everyone to leave with tools and knowledge they can use to strengthen their businesses.” The Program Committee has planned an excellent mix of educational programs, division meetings and social outings. SENATE & HOUSE RE-ELECT LEADERS – SESSION BEGINS FEB. 13 Senate President Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) and House Speaker Rick Thompson (D-Wayne) have been re-elected to lead the state's two legislative bodies for the next two years. Kessler has been a member of the Senate since 1997, and was elected President in November 2011 to fill the vacancy left by then Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, who became Acting Governor. Speaker Thompson is beginning his eighth term in the House, and his fourth term as Speaker. As expected, Senator Joe Minard (D-Harrison) was elected as the new Senate Clerk. Governor Tomblin will soon appoint a replacement in the Senate for Minard. The governor has three recommendations for a replacement. House Judiciary Chairman Tim Miley, Delegate Sam Cann and Commissioner Mike Romano were submitted by the 12th Senatorial District Executive Committee. Newly elected state Agriculture Commissioner Senator Walt Helmick (D- Pocahontas) will resign next week and the governor will receive a list of three from that senatorial district. The newest member of the Senate, Rocky Fitzsimmons (D-Ohio) was sworn in earlier this week to replace Senator Orphy Klempa, who was elected to the Ohio County Commission. The 81st Legislature was sworn in on Wednesday, January 9. The composition of the House of Delegates will be more bi-partisan with a Democratic majority of 54-46. The 60-day regular session will convene on Wednesday, February 13, and adjourn on Saturday, April 13. SEN. ROCKEFELLER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT At a press conference held today, January 11, U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) announced he will not seek re-election. Sen. Rockefeller has served West Virginia for five terms. “As I approach 50 years of public service in West Virginia, I’ve decided that 2014 will be the right moment for me to find new ways to fight for the causes I believe in and to spend more time with my incredible family,” Sen. Rockefeller said. Seven-term U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) announced her plans to run for Sen. Rockefeller’s seat in 2014. 2013 CAWV MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY/BUYERS GUIDE PROMOTES MEMBERS STATEWIDE The 2013 CAWV Membership Directory / Buyers Guide was sent this week to state and federal agencies, coal companies, oil and natural gas producers and manufacturing businesses throughout the state. Procurement officers at the county, state and federal level now have members’ names and contact information at their fingertips. The Directory lists members alphabetically, by region, and by the products and services they provide. Through the years, the Directory has become a one-stop-shop for those looking for contractors, subcontractors and suppliers. The Directory was mailed this week and should have arrived on members' desks. Members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the publication which features information about the CAWV, contact details for federal and state agencies, tax rates, and phone numbers for local municipalities. Each member firm receives one free copy of the directory. Additional copies are available at $15 each. ORDER YOUR CAWV LICENSE PLATES NOW - APPLICATION ONLINE Members can show their support for the construction industry and elevate the reputation of construction as a career choice by signing up for an official Division of Motor Vehicles - issued “Hard at Work” license plate. (Final may vary slightly). An application is available on the association’s homepage at www.cawv.org. Companies can submit multiple applications by completing a form for each vehicle and submitting one check to cover the total fee. The initial cost, payable to the CAWV Scholarship Foundation, is $70. This includes a one-time $40 fee for the license plate and the normal $30 yearly registration fee. Annual renewals are $45. The entire license plate fee goes directly to the State Road Fund. All Class A vehicles, which includes anything under 10,000 pounds, are eligible for the plate.
