Goals In 2013 the Board of Directors took the bold initiative to re-evaluate the current goals and objectives and to see if there was a better way to serve our membership and to pro- mote the district. The Board determined a new board promise which is: To be Edmon- ton and Northern Canada’s Medical, Health and Wellness Destination. (Northern was changed to Western Feb 2013) We will continue to: x Work on Enhancement Projects for Edmonton Kingsway. x Focus marketing of the services of the Area and promote economic develop- ment. Association Legal Profile (City Council approved Expansion October 2012 but the expansion did not come into effect until January 2013) The Edmonton Kingsway Revitalization Zone (BRZ) was established by a City of Ed- monton Bylaw on November 10, 1987. Name changed in December 2016 to Business Improvement Area BIA. The Association represents and serves those assessed for business tax located within the geographical boundaries stated below. The City’s official Kingsway Business Association Bylaw #8621 (as amended). x Kingsway Avenue starting at 106 Street continuing Northwest and ending at the North and Southbound railway tracks, including those properties fronting both the South and North side of that portion of Kingsway Avenue x The North and Southbound railway tracks starting at Kingsway Avenue contin- uing North and ending at the Yellowhead Trail, including those properties fronting the East side of this portion of the railway tracks x Yellowhead Trail starting at the North – Southbound railway tracks and con- tinuing East ending at 107 Street including those properties fronting the South side of that portion of the Yellowhead Trail x 107 Street starting at the Yellowhead Trail and continuing South to 120 Ave- nue where it branches into 106 Street, continuing South on 106 Street and ending at Kingsway Avenue, including those properties fronting the West side of those portions of 106 Street and 107 Street The members of the Board of Directors are appointed by City Council. We spent a lot of our time refocusing ourselves on communications, en- gagement, community involvement and membership participation. I can tell you that I am personally very pleased with the level of engage- ment from our members of this association. What I am most proud of is how we were able to achieve all the goals that we set for our- selves as the administration team for the Kingsway District Association . I am grateful for the level of participation of the Board of Directors that we have and I am grateful for their guidance and continued support of initiatives brought forward by ourselves, members and the general public. Being a Board of Director of the Kingsway District Association is a lot of work and comes with a very busy schedule . I also want to recognize the City of Edmonton Sustainable De- velopment department specifically. I have looked for guidance and support for many of our initiatives. We are lucky to have such strong advocacy in the City of Edmonton. I would also like to point out we have seen continued support from our City Councillor Bev Essling- er and for that I am very grateful. The largest project we completed in 2016 was our winter lighting along Kingsway. This project was a huge reinvestment in beautification and en- hancement 2017 is our 30th year and we will be planning a huge celebration as part of our AGM and 2017 Business Awards. I look forward to working with my members, the city and other organizations as we move into 2017. Ellie Sasseville Executive Director Page 6 Blatchford Updates and Pro- gress 2016 Since the official groundbreaking event in August, 2014, a significant amount of site preparation work has taken place at Blatchford. In the first few months, 756,000 cubic metres of topsoil and clay have been removed from the site for grading work and the excavation of the first storm water man- agement lake. Blatchford’s big plans for 2017! With the recent approval of the renewable energy strategy for Blatchford, the City of Edmonton can now start major construction at the site. It’s shaping up to be a busy year as crews will be preparing the site for the first stage of residential units as well as the construction of a section of the central park. Here’s a quick look at the big items planned for 2017! Stage 1 residential onsite servicing. The first stage in Blatchford will include approximately 250 condominium and townhome units. Before our homebuilders can start constructing these energy- efficient homes, we first have to service the area. This includes installing underground utilities like sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and water lines. In Blatchford’s case, this also involves adding special infrastructure to accommodate the District Energy Sharing System, which will provide the heating, cooling and hot water to the homes. Roads and laneways. Once the underground utilities have been installed, roads and laneways (alleys) will start to be built. Blatchford has custom designed streets, including laneways with landscaping and lighting in the areas where garage suites will be permitted. Incorporating these elements will make the lane feel more like a street and will help create a different type of public space. District Energy Sharing System (DESS). The majority of 2017 will be spent finalizing the DESS technical documents for construction tendering later this year and setting up the municipal utility that will run the system. Drilling of the boreholes for the shallow geo-exchange and construction of the energy centre (building which will house the equipment) may begin in late 2017. Selecting our homebuilders. Blatchford will be no ordinary community and that means choosing homebuilders who match our vision and our philosophy about creating a different kind of neighbour- hood. Our builders will be selected through a competitive process and we expect to announce them later this year. Once our homebuilders have been selected, they will begin pre-sales in 2018 to allow people to secure their spot as one of very first residents! Visit BlatchfordEdmonton.ca for more information! Provided by the City of Edmonton Blatchford Page 7 E n e r g i z i n g K DA In 2016 we continued to see excellent member engagement and participation in all our activities. We will continue to survey and make member needs our priority. The Member Communication Plan & Engagement In 2014 we began to create a communications plan to look for new ways to engage our membership and to create a buz and an understanding of the level of tourism traffic as well as medical and retail traffic we see in Kingsway. We made it a priority to assist our hoteliers to market to the markets outside our region and to collect data on our visitors . We started to share statistics with our members on the traffic using Kingsway daily and offer ways for them to advertise to capitalize on this traffic flow of potential customers. We feel that the more we communicate and engage, the more active our association members become. We have continued to see our numbers grow for event attendance, feedback and overall participation. We have begun to include other BIA’s to be a part of our projects and see greater city wide participation. Information Sharing The KDA has seen direct benefits from sharing information with other groups and or- ganizations . We partner with groups interested in a healthy well community. Some of the organizations we align with are; Edmonton Public Schools RCMP City of Edmonton Great Neighborhoods Hope Mission Fellow Edmonton BRZ’s Boyle Street Reach Edmonton Food Bank Edmonton Oil Kings/Oilers Santa’s Anonymous Edmonton Eskimos Valour Place Crystal Kids RWE Events Aviation Museum Edmonton Prospects Glenrose Hospital Rehabilitation Hospital foundation Royal Alex Hospital Foundations Page 8 Page 9 Energizing KDA (cont’d) Moving Forward Enhance- ments September 2016 The Board of the Kingsway District Association' purchased old signs from the airport land and had them refurbished, they were installed in September 2015 . This capital project was at a cost of just under $30,000 that was taken from our reserve funds. This sign project was very well received and two of them have been created and are standing along Kingsway. During 2016 we were able to utilize our new signage to share information with passing vehicles.
