BUCKHEAD PARK OVER GA400 96 09/23/16 | ROGERS PARTNERS Architect+Urban Designers CONCEPT STUDY - PART 1 unknown (construction cost) 8.2 acres (357,200 sqft) I-696 Pedestrian Plazas Designer: MDOT Year completed: 1989 Location: Oak Park, MI Length: A set of three 700 ft long bridge decks Width(s): 170 ft (width of highway) A set of three landscaped plazas were incorporated into the design and construction if I-696, forming the tunnels through which the highway passes. These structures are a set of three 700-foot-wide bridges that cross the freeway within a mile. They allow members of the Jewish community to walk to synagogues on the Sabbath and other holidays when Jewish law prohib- its driving. These plazas had their length limited; if they were longer they would be considered tunnels that would require ventilation systems. BUCKHEAD PARK OVER GA400 97 PRECEDENT RESEARCH $6.8M (construction cost) 0.15 acres (6,400 sqft) $1,063/sf Melkwegbridge Designer: NEXT Architects; Rietveld Landscape Year completed: 2012 Location: Purmerend, Netherlands Length: 330 ft for bicycle pathway; 150 ft for pedestrian pathway Width(s): 12 ft for bicycle pathway; 16 ft for pedestrian pathway A steeply arching upper level for pedestrians and a zig-zagging lower level for cyclists and wheelchairs. One bank is higher than the other, so to achieve the gentle slope required for bicycles and wheelchairs, the team needed to create a 330-feet-long pathway. They decided to also create a shorter route for pedestrians that offers a high viewpoint. At 40 ft high, this arch is high enough to allow boats to pass beneath and the lower deck splits into two parts that revolve open when boats are approaching. The pedestrian bridge weighs 85 tons, consists of 130 steps and is supported by a steel arch. The bridge sections were hoisted into place by 300 and 700 ton cranes and sit in concrete col- umns/bents supported by 40 feet deep drilled piers of 48” and 60” diameters. 105 cubic yards of concrete were poured in place to create the bridge deck. BUCKHEAD PARK OVER GA400 100 09/23/16 | ROGERS PARTNERS Architect+Urban Designers CONCEPT STUDY - PART 1 $13.8M (construction cost) 5.5 acres (239,580 sqft) $58/sf (1976) Freeway Park Designer: Lawrence Halprin and Angela Danadjieva Year completed: 1976 Location: Seattle, WA Length: 1,500 ft Width(s): 160 ft The first park built over a highway, Freeway Park stretches over Interstate 5 in downtown Seat- tle and reconnected the neighborhoods bisected by the road.
