Sawbench Project

Sawbench Project

Sawbench Project Materials: • 1x12x40 – 2 legs cut into 19 ¾ lengths • 1x6x62 – 2 stretchers cut to 30” lengths • 5/4 or true 1” stock x6x65 – 2 top boards cut into 32” lengths **These dimensions are what I used but may vary depending on the height of your bench and personal tastes** Tools Used: • Hand saws rip and crosscut • Smoothing Plane • Marking Knife • Square • Carcass Saw Process: 1. Cut all parts to rough size leaving a margin of no more than 1/8” of waste so you don’t have to plane too much away. 2. Flatten and square 1 edge of the legs using square, marking knife, and smoothing plane 3. Measure finished length of leg, knife a line on all 4 faces, and then plane to the line. 4. Use the finished leg to mark the length of the second leg and repeat step 3. 5. Cut V notches on legs using a rip saw and clean up using a chisel, lightly chamfering the sharp edges 6. Repeat steps 2 & 3 on the stretchers 7. Saw off lower corners of stretchers and plane to clean up 8. Lay a stretcher against the legs in final position and knife around the edges to layout the position of the notch on the legs where the stretcher will join. 9. Using a carcass saw and rip hand saw, cut out the notch then clean up to the knife lines using a chisel 10. Attach stretchers using screws. Make sure to pre-drill to avoid splitting the wood. It’s ok to use power here but a brace and bit will work too if you have a small enough bit. You could also fashion wooden pegs and drill and hammer together to be authentic. 11. Repeat steps 2 & 3 on top boards 12. Chamfer all exposed edges of the tops using a smoothing plane 13. Attach top board using screws 14. Start sawing! .
