A Service of Morning Prayer 1st Hymn #103 (Common Praise-Canada) On Jordan's bank, the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. Then cleansed be every breast from sin; make straight the way for God within. Prepare we in our hearts a home, where such a mighty guest may come. For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge, and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away, like flowers that wither and decay. To heal the sick stretch out thine hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; shine forth, and let thy light restore earth's own true loveliness once more. All praise, eternal Son, to thee whose advent doth thy people free, whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. The Minister shall read aloud these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow. The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 2. 14. I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord." Psalm 122:1 The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation in the form following. DEARLY beloved , we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness and mercy. A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the Minister, all kneeling. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, By what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, That we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, To the glory of your name. Amen. The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone, standing: the people still kneeling. THE ALMIGHTY and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. Minister O LORD, open thou our lips; People. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Minister. O God, make speed to save us; People. O Lord, make haste to help us. Here, all standing up, the Minister shall say: GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; People. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Minister. Praise ye the Lord; People. The Lord’s Name be praised. Canticle VENITE, EXULTEMUS DOMINO. said together. O COME, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and show ourselves glad in him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land. O COME, let us worship, and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is the Lord our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. PSALM 29 said together. Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name; worship the LORD in holy splendor. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, "Glory!" The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever. May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace! GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The First Lesson. Genesis 1:1-5 Première lecture. Nous rendons grâce à Dieu 2nd Hymn #45 (Common Praise–Canada) Down Galilee’s slow roadways, a stranger travelled on from Nazareth to Jordan to be baptized by John. He went down to the waters with soldier, scribe, and slave, but there within the river the sign was birth and grave. Arising from the river, he saw the heavens torn; it seemed the sky was open to show the Spirit’s form. The holy dove descended; he heard a glorious voice: “You are my own beloved— my child, my heart, my choice.” We too have found a roadway; it led us to this place. We all have had to travel in search of hope and grace. But now beside this water again a voice is heard: “You are my own, my chosen, beloved of your Lord.” The Second Lesson.
