Oliver Cromwell’s side King Charles’ side Roundhead/ Cavalier/Royalist parliamentarian • In August 1642 the English Civil War started. • At first, the King’s side (Royalists/Cavaliers) did much better than Cromwell’s side (Roundheads/Parliamentarians). This is because they had better equipment and used guns (they were called muskets). Charles might have been able to win the Civil War early on but he made some poor decisions and was not a good leader. • At the start of the Civil War, Cromwell’s side (Roundheads/Parliamentarians) did not have a very good army. But Cromwell was an excellent leader and trained what he called his New Model Army to fight for him. As you can see from the picture, they were well equipped with an iron breastplate to protect their vital organs, an iron gauntlet (glove) to protect their hands, a sword and a gun (musket) and a pot helmet to protect the head (this is why their nickname was the Roundheads). Task After looking at the armies, who do you now think had the strongest side? Explain your answer. Do you still think the same as previously?
