And welcome at the site where beer has been brewed since 1854. Back then under the name: 'Brouwerij gebroeders Van Aubel'. (trans. Brewery of the Van Aubel Brothers) At the beginning of the 1900's it was no longer fashionable to use the family name for ones brewery, up to this point it was custom to do so. Thus thee brothers Van Aubel chose a brand name: the 'Ridder Brouwerij'. Naming the brewery after the Roman knight: St. Martin. This knight came across a poor man and cut off half his cloak to give to the poor man. He was only able to give half of his cloak as that half he owned himself. The other half was property of Rome. Later, in a dream the knight saw the poor man as Jesus and so he changed his life from thee brave combative knight he was, into a charitable man who lend a helping hand wherever he could. A man who loved to do good by others. City brewery 'de Maastrichter Maltezer' is an homage to the historical 'Ridder Maltezer' beer that was brewed at this site for the first time in 1954. The Maltezer heritage: "lending a helping hand" is an idea the Maastrichter Maltezer enjoys continuing. The brewery has a special connection to the Maltezer order from Malta. This order of knights Hospitaller was founded during crusades to protect pilgrims on the road to the holy land and still exists today. Every year still, the order builds hospitals in developing countries to help those in need and extent an helping hand. You will find the eight-pointed cross of the order of the Maltezer Knights Hospitaller in Lourdes (FR), during the guiding of pilgrimages. In addition you will also find the cross on the German ambulances, where the order is more well known. Since 2018 you have been able to find the Maltezer Cross on the logo of our brewery as well as on our beers. In order to wear the Maltezer cross we make an donation to the Knights Hospitaller on Malta for every liter of Maltezer beer, so that they can keep helping others. Will you help us reach a helping hand? Cheers! On behalf of the full team of City Brewery the Maastrichter Maltezer. Tom de Lepper THE MALTEZER Citybrewery the Maastrichter Maltezer Maltezer beer after the old recipe The Maltezer was one of the first craft beers in the Netherlands. Brewed in 1954 it gave the incentive to the re-discovery of flavoursome beers in the Netherlands. The Maltezer is a (Dutch) Dort a style derived from the German Dortmunder. It is the oldest style of beer that is still being brewed in the Netherlands after Pilsners. The German Dortmunder style beers, out of which the DAB makes the most famous example, are bottom fermenting beers with a malty, lightly hopped character. In terms of colour it is somewhat pilsners-like. The (Dutch) Dort is amber coloured, 6,5% in alcohol level and predominantly has a malty-sweet character. Hop and yeast flavours are not noticeable directly. Sixteen years after the former brewery closed their doors, we started brewing the Maltezer beer again back in may 2018. Due to the developments in hop an malt quality through the years and the fact that we brew on a smaller scale, we had to tweak the recipe. Every week we applied small changes to the recipe and in seven cafés we let the people of Maastricht taste these test-batches. Our goal is to brew a beer as tasteful as possible. All kinds of different brewing techniques contribute to this. The Maltezer is unfiltered and unpasteurized. It has a very fine, thick foam and a nice balance between the sweetness of the malt and the bitterness of the German hop. The Maltezer beer is easy to drink, with the first sip looking for a second glass… Technical data 6,5% alc.
