Dužijanca Dužijanca is a celebration ending the harvest; it was perme- ated with a spiritual – religious dimension, given that it originated from the Bunjevac Croat farming families, expressing a feeling of gratitude towards God for the picked crops. Nowadays, Dužijanca is a city event that starts in April with the act of blessing the har- vest, and it ends by the end of August with a parish festival in Bu- 06 naric and which comprises about twenty events in Subotica and the neighbouring villages, having their own Dizijanca celebrations and are guided by Bandaš and Bandašica (the Queen and King of Duzijanca) who have been chosen prior to the event. More information at: www.duzijanca.co.rs Contact: (00381) 24 555 589 The Inter-Ethno Festival The Inter-Ethno Festival is held in late August and it is an en- counter of diverse cultures. The event hosts excellent dancers and musicians from ten countries. Each night they perform their pro- ductions within the Dance Panorama programme and show their colourful and gorgeous culture to local citizens. Traditionally, for- eign companies visit other settlements and locations in Vojvodina 07 thus creating a life-long experience for the citizens in Backa Topola, Senta, Kanjiza and Horgos. It will be the fourth time for organis- ing the “Plesati zajedno – Együtt táncolni” /Let’s dance together/ event during which the three Subotica-based cultural associations, the Bunjevacko kolo, the Mladost and the Népkör perform their joint production. Programme: Performances Crafts fair Craft workshops Fairy tale telling Skills and crafts The venue of the Festival is the square in front of the City Hall, which is called “Etnopolis” during the five festival days. Traditional tents and stands lend the square a medieval atmosphere attracting the citizens of Subotica and its neighbourhood. There are some estimations that more than 20.000 visitors became “citizens of the world” during the festival. Etnopolis is a venue for concerts in the evenings. The festival club in the Népkör has become a traditional place for dances and world music parties. More information: www.interetno.net Kontakt: (00381) 24 55 70 33 The Ethno Fest Ethno Fest is a multicultural project that gathers artists from all over the world, with the intention to present their cultural heritage, but also to present new musical and other artistic forms inspired by diverse cultural heritage that surrounds us. Ethno Fest as a festival 08 of cultures of the world traditionally takes place during June, both in the city centre and in Palić. Programme: Musical performances, Art workshops, Exhibitions, Handicrafts fair, Documentaries. During the previous years of the festival, we have had the op- portunity to enjoy the concerts of well-known artists from the re- gion and also from Spain, France, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Cam- eroon, Turkey, Bulgaria, Portugal, Finland, Ukraine, from Cyprus... Ethno Fest is a concept without boundaries in the world of culture and development of intercultural dialogue. More information at: www.etnofest.org Contact: (00381) 655507815 Romart Festival Romart is an international festival of the Roma culture that acknowledges the values of interculturality, multiculturality, toler- ance and human rights, as well as that of the general notion of cul- ture and art, through the participation of the Roma and non-Roma people. The festival welcomes artists and guests from all over the 09 world, promoting Roma culture, represented through classical, jazz, funk and other new music trends such as rap or hip-hop, and also the gyass- a unique musical expression created in this part of Vo- jvodina. Programme: Musical performances Creative workshops, Debate It is our belief that the Roma integration, in part, consists of recognising their cultural originality. However, we wish to prove that the Roma culture is also flexible in view of its development and that it has not been excluded from global trends. More information at: www.romartfest.net Contact: (00381) 24 572 579 Days of Jewish culture The European Days of Jewish Culture are held in September and during these open days locals and guests can visit the Jewish community and get familiar with its work and the Jewish tradition. Jews have been living in Subotica since 1775. The building of the 10 Subotica Jewish Community was built in the early 20th century, in 1902, at the same time when the monumental new Synagogue was erected. It is located in the city centre and is listed as an architec- tural heritage built by the well known art nouveau designers Dezső Jakab and Marcell Komor, who designed the Synagogue, the City Hall and other buildings in Subotica, which lend it the character of a city of art nouveau. The Subotica Jewish Community is open to cooperation with all cultural institutions in the city and it had joint projects with the City Museum, the Public Library, some of the schools - whose pupils vis- ited the Synagogue-, associations and cultural workers, and literary evenings, book promotions were held in the Community’s premises. Selecting the highest quality productions in European cinema- 11 tography and with guest appearances by authentic music bands, we bring about the European spirit and film art for the hot days in July. Programme: Official Selection, Parallels and Encounters, Young Spirit of Eu- rope, Eco Dox, Homage Programme, New Hungarian Film, Cinema- tography in the spotlight, Underground spirit The European Film Festival Palić presents about 85 films within eight programme sections at five locations and presents the meet- ing point between the public and the contemporary trends in film- making. Aside from the new film productions and encounters with respective authors, Palić also welcomed many renowned personali- ties in the art of films and others, awarding them the Aleksandar Lifka Award for exceptional contribution to European cinematog- raphy. On top of this award, the Festival also awards the Golden Tower for best film and the Palić Tower for best director, likewise the Special Jury’s Prize. The international jury of critics decides on the best film within the Parallels and Encounters section, whereas the Young Spirit of Europe selection awards a young European film- maker with the Underground Spirit Award. In the year of 2005, a serious progress in the organisation was made and since 12 then this festival has been visited by nearly 10.000 people. More information at: www.summer3p.org Contact: (00381) 64 235 53 80 Days of Contemporary Hungarian Film From the beginnings, the aim of the Days of Contemporary Hun- garian Films has been to make the Hungarian and non-Hungarian audience in Vojvodina familiar with the latest achievements in 13 Hungarian filmmaking and to promote it. Hungarian films made in the previous year are screened in some seven-eight settlements in Vojvodina each year in March under the title “Week of Hungarian Films in Vojvodina”. The event was organised for the first time in 1997 in Subotica alone, in the Népkör Hungarian Cultural Association. During the Week of Hungarian Films 8-10 films are screened in two screenings. The screenings are usually followed by meetings-discussions with the filmmakers and are very popular among the Hungarian audience in Vojvodina, but it is also visited by Serbs and Croats and has a massive media coverage both in the Hungarian and the mainstream Serbian media.
