The document describesa vital cultural life as essential to a functioning democracy. It also examines the many aspects of the country's complex, interdependent support system which includes individual, foundation, and corporate support; governmentgrants; and the many creative ways in which cultural organizations earn income. Includedare over 50 recommendations in five categoriesor steps to the future: Educating our Youth for the Future; Investing in Cultural Capital; Renewing American Philanthropy; Affirming the Public Role; and Expanding InternationalCultural Relations. The report concludes with a selected bibliography.
