Street skateboarding courses are designed to replicate real-world urban terrain featuring stair sets, rails, gaps, benches, ledges, and planters on riding surfaces of variable elevations alongside traditional skatepark elements such as banks and quarterpipes. Elevation changes between riding surfaces usually do not exceed eight feet (2.44 meters). Park terrain courses are based around transitional concrete bowls from five to 10 feet (1.52 to 3.01 meters) in depth and are distinguished by design features such as spines, angled hips, extensions, escalators, set-back walls, elevation changes, gaps, transfers and variable grinding surfaces. Differences between the Skateboarding World Championships and the Olympic Games The Olympic Games skateboarding competition format is identical to the one used at the World Championships in both street and park disciplines. The skater quotas are larger at the World Championships. Changes since the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Skateboarding makes its Olympic Games debut at Tokyo 2020. Sport Rules and Procedures Street The street competition comprises two rounds: prelims and final. In the prelims, the 20 female or male skaters will first compete in four heats of five skaters. The first eight skaters from the combined ranking of the heats will progress to the final. In each round, the skaters will perform two 45 second runs and five tricks. Judging The two runs and each of their five tricks are judged by five judges who will use a 0-10.00 points scale. The highest and lowest judges' scores for each run or trick are dropped, and the remaining three scores are averaged to give a score for each run and each trick (seven scores). The best four scores from runs or tricks will be added to give the total round score. Timekeeping For all run and trick attempts, skaters are given five seconds to start after the starter's signal. If skaters purposefully do not begin their run or trick attempt within five seconds of the starter’s signal, they will lose their opportunity to be scored on that attempt at the discretion of the head judge. The runs are 45 seconds. The clock is triggered by a technical official when the skater places both feet on their board at the beginning of the run. A horn signal will be triggered when the clock reaches "0". The clock will not be stopped under any conditions. If the run has to be interrupted for external reasons, the skater will be given a restart. Fall In case of fall, the run will be terminated before expiration of the time limit and scored. Tie break rules Street • The skater with the highest best run is ranked first • If still tied, the five judges are asked to vote (electronically) on who should be placed first. Protests / appeals Once competition scores are approved by the head judge and published, they are no longer open to appeal.
