their files quickly and securely in a Microsoft SharePoint document library, CIFS file shares, or local directories using their mobile devices. NetApp Connect includes an app that runs on your mobile device and a server in your data center that provides access to your corporate data. NetApp Connect Server, a client-server mobile information management (MIM) application, is deployed behind your enterprise firewall. NetApp Connect provides you with the following benefits: • Secure access to business files from mobile devices, without having to migrate those files to a cloud, use a new on-premises storage system, or use a VPN • Pixel-perfect file display, enabling users to zoom in without resolution degradation • Easy file navigation and document annotation tools • A simple implementation on top of enterprise-class security, authentication, and access controls • Native support for accessing Windows home directories, other CIFS file shares, and data in SharePoint 2007, 2010, or 2013 6 | NetApp Connect Mobile Device Guide What you can do with NetApp Connect NetApp Connect uses a combination of a mobile app, a connection to a NetApp Connect server, and documents and files stored on the server. Using the NetApp Connect server, you can configure and manage the system and its users. Using the NetApp Connect app on your mobile device, you can do the following: • Access your files securely and reliably without using cloud storage and without a VPN. • Display your Microsoft Office files, SharePoint files, or file shares on your mobile device. • Securely browse the Internet and your intranet with whitelist and blacklist controls. • Place your files in folders on the mobile device, for more efficient organization. • Annotate your files with your custom notes. • Zoom in and still retain high-quality resolution. • Securely save files locally for offline viewing (access governed by server policies). • Send files to and receive files from other mobile apps (access governed by server policies). Using the NetApp Connect server, you can do the following: • Configure the server and enterprise repositories for mobile access. • View license information. • Configure identities and authentication. • Create and manage repositories and provision user access to those repositories. • Select supported and unsupported file formats. • Enable administrative policies that govern access to browsers, file annotations, offline access, log files, and third-party editors. File types that you can share on your mobile device Using NetApp Connect, you can view various types of files on your mobile device. • Microsoft Word documents (DOC, DOCX) • Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (XLS, XLSX without pivoted tables) • Microsoft PowerPoint presentations (PPT, PPTX) • Adobe PDFs • Text files (TXT) • Image files (JPEG, JPEG2000, nonanimated GIF, TIFF, 24-bit or 32-bit BMP, PNG, CR2, NEF) • Video (MP4, M4V) Introduction to NetApp Connect | 7 How NetApp Connect works NetApp Connect uses a combination of a mobile app, a connection to a NetApp Connect server, and documents stored on the server. You can use the server to configure and manage the system and its users. The following image shows the high-level NetApp Connect architecture: The NetApp Connect mobile app enables users to view their enterprise files on their mobile devices easily and securely. The app receives a compressed and encrypted format of users' files and renders them clearly on the mobile device. When a user starts the app, the app connects to a messaging broker and begins communicating with the NetApp Connect server. The server analyzes information such as file formats, policies governing user's file access, and rules governing the processing of different types of files. The server then serves file information back to the mobile app, generates thumbnails for files on the mobile app, and renders the images or pages of the file. 8 | NetApp Connect Mobile Device Guide Where to find more information about NetApp Connect You can find more information about NetApp Connect on the NetApp Support Site at support.netapp.com and in other NetApp Connect documentation.
