Gensler led prAna down a path that straddles a Fabrication Coordination fine line between the organic and the sophisticated. Using prAna’s tagline, “Born from the Experience,” as inspiration Gensler created an environment that understands the company’s mission and uses recycled and natural materials to display the products inspired from world travels and curiosity. Gensler used readily available knotted hemp rope as walls to surround the booth and provide a semi-permeable glimpse into the space while providing a sense of calm and quiet inside. The designers went so far as to block out the sodium vapor lighting hanging above the booth to soften interior light. The booth entrance sidewall is actually a 40-foot shipping container split in half. It serves as a background for a display platform and as a perch for the company’s cause partners to present their programs. prAna’s point of view is embedded in unexpected places, for example, paper maché mannequins are covered in prAna messages, while plywood planes are covered in takeaway collateral organized like bee swarms. Pinwheel clusters provide stages for the clothing collections, and allow them to present to 300 exhibit attendees at one time. The materials palette emphasizes protection of natural resources over recycled content;the palette minimizes the amount of additive materials and focuses on raw materials for the finishes. This straightforward approach to materials compliments prAna’s commitment to the environment. With a presentation design three times the size of their previous booth, prAna’s presence at this summer’s Outdoor Retail tradeshow catapulted them to the forefront amongst the industry’s most established brands. Gensler’s bold design embodied prAna’s philosophy while enabling their entire apparel line to be displayed in a true expression of the brand. 10 | Gensler | Retail 11 | Gensler | Retail prAna Retail Stores Multiple Locations, USA 6,000 avg. sf Services provided prAna, a leading active lifestyle apparel manufacturer opened Fixture Design its first retail stores in Boulder, CO and Santa Clara, CA in Prototype Design 2007. Well-known for its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, diverse businesses and commitment to sustainable living, Boulder, Colorado is the ideal location for prAna’s first flagship store. (REI), is designed to serve as a working Interior Architectural Design laboratory to analyze the performance of green building Building Renovation features and new retail concepts. The store’s design also Signage and Environmental Graphics incorporates an elevated community center that is the focal LEED Coordination Services point of the store. The 42,000-square-foot store, a renovation Fixture Design and expansion of the store’s existing Boulder location, is designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold LEED Gold Certified standards. Additionally, the store is part of REI’s involvement in the LEED for Retail pilot program. The overall design scheme is meant to be reminiscent of nature, and is reflected in the exterior architecture and interior design elements. The store’s façade incorporates visual cues of earthen strata, thick forest canopies, and a towering pinnacle. REI’s commitment to reduce its environmental footprint is translated through the store design in the use of green materials and building techniques including an aggressive daylight harvesting system that will reduce the store’s energy consumption and allow for more natural daylight in to the store. By utilizing Solatubes, throughout the store, and a centrally located glass atrium skylight the building will save approximately 20% in its energy costs, the annual equivalent of powering up to three houses. Additionally, the building captures the sun’s energy to power the store through technology called building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV)., a first of its kind in a retail environment. Other
