Introducing Our Academic Staff2018 For 2018 SeniorDr Lyn Bishop Executive Team FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL/CEO BA Hons (Psych), MEd ADMIN, MEd STUD, MBA PhD (QLD), MAPsS, FACEL, JP (QUAL), FAIM Dr Lyn Bishop has had a long and distinguished career in the State Education Department. She has held the positions of Senior Mistress, Deputy Principal, Principal, Deputy Executive Director of Metropolitan East Region (responsible for over 200 primary, secondary and special schools in the Region), and A/Director of Quality Assurance for Education Queensland, before leaving the Department at the end of 1996 to set up Sheldon College as an independent, non-denominational, co-educational College in the Redland Shire. Dr Bishop opened Sheldon College as its Foundation Principal in 1997. Dr Bishop holds Bachelor Degrees in Arts and Education; Masters Degrees in Educational Studies, Educational Administration and Business Administration, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Education. Dr Bishop is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, and a Fellow of the Australian College of Educational Leaders. Dr Bishop is a fully qualified psychologist and is registered with the Queensland Psychologists Board and the Australian Psychological Society. Dr Bishop is also a Justice of the Peace (Qualified). Dr Bishop was also a part time lecturer in the Business Faculty at the Queensland University of Technology where she lectured in the Master of Business Administration Program (MBA). In 1999 Dr Bishop won the Australian Institute of Management Professional Manager of the Year. This is the first time this award had been won by someone in the field of education. In 2002 Dr Bishop won the prestigious Ernst and Young Queensland Entrepreneur of the Year and the Australian Entrepreneur of the Year for a Community, Social and Not-for-Profit Enterprise. She was also awarded a Centenary Medal for services to education in 2003. In 2013 Dr Bishop was awarded the QUT Most Outstanding Alumni Award for the Faculty of Education and in 2014 Dr Bishop was also awarded the title of QELI Ambassador for her contribution to educational leadership through the Queensland Educational Leadership Institute. In 2018, Sheldon College was recognised as Queensland’s only school to be certified to the International Standard in Quality Assurance (ISO 9001: 2015) and is one of only two schools Australia-wide, to receive this certification. In addition to this certification, Sheldon College is the only school in Australia to be certified to the Australian/New Zealand Standard in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) ANZ/NZS 4801:2001, an outstanding mark of quality for any organisation. Ms Peta Barker Email: [email protected] DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING – Years 7 to 12 BEd (Studies) Peta is a passionate educator with 25 years’ experience. Having completed her Bachelor of Education Studies, she fulfilled many roles within Education Queensland (English/Drama teacher, Head of Department, Principal Education Advisor – Australian Curriculum, and Deputy Principal), before her path brought her to Sheldon College. Peta joined the Sheldon College Senior Executive team in 2015, where her role as Director of Teaching and Learning (Years 7-12) is integral in driving best practice in teaching and learning across the secondary years. With a personal interest in digital pedagogy – and a natural flair for creative and critical thinking – Peta works to inspire academic staff to innovate within their classroom and ignite students’ passion for learning. She believes that student learning is most powerful when schools and home have a strong relationship, and welcomes opportunities to build effective partnerships with families. 2018 will be an exciting time within the secondary years and Peta looks forward to strengthening the sub-College’s focus on producing passionate, driven and successful young adults. Mr Darren Harvey Email: [email protected] DIRECTOR – ASTA (Australian School of The Arts) BEd (Drama & English) (Hons) Drama Entering his twenty-first year at Sheldon College, Darren Harvey continues to develop the Arts as part of our College curriculum in the Arts Education program. Due to the outstanding success of classroom Arts subjects and all of our Ensembles, along with the development of the College’s School Musical Theatre Studies, Darren will continue to expand the Australian School of the Arts further, with a fully developed curriculum on offer for all students across the College, from Preschool to Year 12. With a Bachelor of Education Degree (Drama) and experience in teaching and performing arts, Darren offers all students an opportunity to discover their performing/acting talent and true potential through classroom Drama and the acting component of the ASTA program. In 2007, Darren undertook a six week sabbatical tour visiting many Arts Schools and Universities across America and Canada, with an agenda focussed on analysing different Arts Schools and different stages of development. That same year, Darren was appointed to the new role of Manager of the Institute of The Arts, a position he has enjoyed implementing and developing now as the Director of the Australian School of the Arts. In 2010, Darren also visited the Singapore School of the Arts to look at the incredible arts facilities and programs that are currently being offered there. Darren continues to be involved with the College’s Senior Executive team, a role that affords him the opportunity to contribute strategically at a whole of College level. In addition, Darren has gained further experience and success over past years as coach of many sporting teams at various levels, including coaching the U18’s AFL team to a grand final appearance, and winning the premiership. 2017 was another very busy year for Darren and the Arts department, with his role as producer and director of the Musical “Mary Poppins”, performed at the Redland Performing Arts Complex and the 13th Annual Arts Academy Awards held at the Sheldon Event Centre. In addition, Darren was honoured to take on the role of Chair of the 20 Year Celebration Committee, overseeing and co-ordinating a number of memorable events throughout the course of the year. In 2018, Darren looks forward to the ongoing challenge that Sheldon College provides and knows that it will be another exciting and challenging year of enriched learning experiences and achievements at the College. He is particularly excited about producing and directing Sheldon College’s 20th Musical – “Legally Blonde”. The ASTA Professionals Program will enter it’s thirteenth year in 2018 and remains a very exciting adventure for teachers, parents and students alike, with a focus on ongoing growth and evolution. In 2018 the Program will see the introduction of the newly formed School of Fashion and Costume Design. Mr John Lord Email: [email protected] DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE OPERATIONS BEd St DipT(Primary) John Lord has been a member of the Sheldon College staff since 2002 and currently holds the position of Director of College Operations. Prior to working at Sheldon College John held a number of senior management positions: Head of Middle School (Kelvin Grove State College); Deputy Principal (Ferny Grove State High School); Head of Department Physical Education (Ferny Grove State High School); Head of Sport (Rockhampton State High School). John’s first few years of teaching were spent as a Physical Education Itinerant Teacher in the Central Queensland towns of Capella, Tieri, Clermont, Ruby Vale, Kilcoy and Morayfield. With 17 years’ experience as a Health and Physical Education teacher in Queensland, prior to commencing at Sheldon College, John has held the positions of Board of Senior Secondary School Studies Chairperson for Senior Health Education, Chairperson of the Senior Health Syllabus Accreditation Committee and a member of the Evaluation Review Panel for the Health and Physical Education (P-10 Syllabus). John has also been a Guest Lecturer on a number of occasions for the University of Queensland’s Human Movements Faculty. While in the position of Head of Middle College, Kelvin Grove State College, John lead the New Basics Trial being introduced by Education Queensland and directed the twelve month pilot program. John thoroughly enjoys working at Sheldon College and has developed many strong relationships with students, staff and parents. 2 Mrs Michelle Luhrmann Email: [email protected] DIRECTOR OF EARLY LEARNING BEd(Primary) AssocDipEd(Early Childhood) Post Grad Degree (Child & Family Studies) A skilled practitioner with over 26 years teaching experience, Michelle holds a Bachelor of Education Degree, an Associate Diploma of Early Childhood Education and a Post Graduate Degree in the area of Child and Family Studies. As the Director of Early Learning, Michelle works with a dynamic group of teachers who are responsible for ensuring that the Early learning programs offered at Sheldon College are second-to-none. She is directly responsible for Curriculum Implementation and for the general care and education of all children enrolled from Wonderland to Prep. She plays an active role in classrooms and oversees each individual child’s progress and development. She is across all aspects of staff development and performance management and is always available to meet with parents to discuss issues regarding their child’s education. Her inherent passion for Early Childhood Education not only won Michelle a National Award for Teaching Excellence it is also the reason why she is so actively involved in so many facets of Early Childhood education within the wider community. Michelle’s background in education has always been involved with Early Childhood Education. Throughout her career she has spent time as a classroom teacher, a Director of a Long Day Care Centre and a TAFE Lecturer in the area of Early Childhood Studies. She is pleased to say that she is now entering her eighteenth year at Sheldon College and can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store.
