The average age for a Midwest League batter has been 21.3. (Cedar Rapids is second youngest at 20.8. Clinton is oldest at 22.3.)

NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The TinCaps went 8-2 on their 10-game homestand. Fort Wayne is 26-16 at home this year, including 18-6 since May 14. The ’Caps are slashing .264/.346/.379 at home this year compared to .214/.295/.314 on the road, where they’re 12-23. The TinCaps have averaged 5.0 runs per game at home and 3.6 per game on the road.

PADRES ON DECK: Friday, the TinCaps and Padres agreed on a 2-year extension of their Player Development Contract (PDC) through the 2020 season. This will stretch the affiliation between the organizations to 22 years continuing what is already the longest-lasting Minor League Baseball affiliation in San Diego’s franchise history. Padres Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller and TinCaps President Mike Nutter held a press conference at Parkview Field on Friday to announce the extension. This season is the 20th year of affiliation between Fort Wayne and San Diego, going back to 1999. The Wizards entered the Midwest League as an affiliate of the Twins in 1993 and remained with Minnesota through 1998.

260 TO THE SHOW: There have been 166 former Fort Wayne Wizards/TinCaps players to appear in the big leagues. That list includes 8 who’ve debuted so far in 2018:

LHP Joey Luchsesi (2016, Padres); LHP Eric Lauer (2016, Padres); RHP Justin Hancock (2012-13, Cubs); OF Franmil Reyes (2014-15, Padres); OF Dustin Peterson (2014, Braves); RHP Walker Lockett (2014-16, Padres); LHP José Castillo (2015-16, Padres); INF Jake Bauers (2014, Rays).

ROCKING THE VOTE: The TinCaps and Parkview Field won Ballpark Digest’s Best of the Ballparks Contest on June 19. Parkview Field defeated Four Winds Field in South Bend in the final round with 62% of the vote. The TinCaps won the subjective contest in 2016. South Bend stole the title last year. More objectively, Stadium Journey has named Parkview Field the best ballpark in all of Minor League Baseball 4 years in a row and 6 of the last 7 years.

5-FOR-5 CLUB: Robbie Podorsky went 5-for-5 with a triple, 2 RBIs, a stolen base, and a spectacular diving catch in left field on June 15. Podorsky became the first TinCap to have a 5-hit game since Franmil Reyes did on Labor Day 2015. (Reyes is now with the Padres in the majors.) Of note, Podorsky is listed at 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, while Reyes stands at 6-foot-5, 275 pounds.

SLUGGER: On their way down to Kentucky on June 12, the TinCaps made a pit stop to visit the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. The team toured the facility and some players even purchased bats. Louisville Slugger started making bats in 1884. Honus Wager was the first player to sign a contract with them in 1905, when they were known as the Hillerich & Bradsby Company. More than 8,000 players have signed with Louisville Slugger in the decades since, including the likes of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio,

Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, and Tony Gwynn.

BIGGEST COMEBACK SINCE: The TinCaps overcame a 6-0 deficit to win 7-6 on June 1 @ Great Lakes. The ’Caps hadn’t overcome a deficit of more than 5 runs to win a game since Aug. 7, 2014, when Fort Wayne erased an 11-2 deficit against the Lake County Captains in an eventual 12-11 win in 10 innings. Fernando Perez hit a game-tying

grand slam in the 8th. The TinCaps had major leaguers Trea Turner (Nationals), Franmil Reyes (Padres), and Dustin Peterson (Braves) in the lineup that night, plus Jake Bauers

(Rays) and Josh VanMeter (Reds, Triple-A Louisville). Lake County had Clint Frazier (Yankees). GO IRISH: On June 4, the TinCaps spent the off-day in South Bend touring the University of Notre Dame. Players and staff had the chance to see the recently renovated Notre Dame Stadium, as well as iconic spots on campus like Touchdown Jesus (Hesburgh Library), the Golden Dome (Main Building), the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. The team also had a luncheon on campus, meeting ND Head Baseball Coach Mik Aoki, and learning about the university’s history in a bi-lingual presentation that focused on the role of immigrants in shaping the school.

DONATION: Along with their parent club, the Padres, the TinCaps have donated $1,000 to provide bats and helmets to the Little League Challenger Division of Fort Wayne. The Challenger Baseball League is an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges (ages 4-22). Johnny TinCap and members from the front office staff a delivered the bats and helmets to the Challenger League on Sunday afternoon.

MLB DRAFT: The Padres had the 7th overall pick and selected LHP Ryan Weathers out of Loretto HS in Tennessee. With the 38th pick, San Diego took SS Xavier Edwards from North Broward Prep HS in Florida. At pick 74, they took OF Grant Little out of Texas Tech.

SPORTSCENTER: After a half-dozen appearances on ESPN in 2017, the TinCaps already have appeared on SportsCenter twice so far this season. Jeisson Rosario made a head-first diving catch from center field at home against Beloit on May 3 that made “Top 10” at No. 9 the following morning… On April 21, Esteury Ruiz and Tirso Ornelas were featured on SportsCenter during Kevin Connor’s “K.C.’s Minor League Minute” segment after they both had 3-hit games that included a home run at Parkview Field against Dayton.

DOWNTOWN FOR A DECADE: The 2018 season marks the 10th year of TinCaps baseball at Parkview Field. From 1993-2008 the team was known as the Fort Wayne Wizards and played at Memorial Stadium, about 3.5 miles north of Parkview Field.

NEW LOOK: This season the TinCaps unveiled new, additional brand marks. The new marks, which are an extension of the team’s brand, have been incorporated into new batting practice tops, BP hats, and road jerseys. The BP tops are charcoal with grey sleeves, with “TinCaps” across the chest in cursive and candy apple red in color. The “T” appears like an apple with a stem and leaf. The BP hats are grey with “Ft.W” in script, with the “W” looking like an apple. Meanwhile, the road jerseys are grey with red sleeves. “Ft. Wayne” is written in that cursive candy apple red font with the “F” resembling an apple. Earlier this season the team debuted new home white jerseys (similar to the previous ones but sans pinstripes and with a more readable number font), plus a dark green alternate jersey that says “The Fort” on the front which is being worn for Thursday home games. The team also has added an alternate home hat that has a white front. Since rebranding from the Wizards to the TinCaps when moving into Parkview Field in 2009, this is the first time the team has updated its uniforms. New gear is available for fans in The Orchard Team Store at the ballpark and online at TinCaps.com.

FRANCHISE RECORD: Defensively, the TinCaps set a franchise record by turning 6 double plays on May 11 at Kane County. According to team records, the previous high for double plays turned in a game was 5 (July 17, 2006 vs. Burlington). Fort Wayne’s lineup that day included future major leaguers Will Venable in left field, Kyle Blanks at first base, and David Freese, who was involved in 1 of the DPs, at third.

MIDWEST LEAGUE RECORD: Shortstop Gabriel Arias was involved in turning all 6 double plays for the TinCaps on May 11 at Kane County. According to the Midwest League record book, Arias tied the record for most double plays turned in a game by an individual. Previously, 4 different first baseman were involved in 6 double plays in a game, with the most recent instance occurring in 1996. The only other shortstop to be involved in 6 double plays in a game was Donnie Sadler, who’d spend parts of 8 years in the bigs, for the Michigan Battle Cats (Red Sox) on April 7, 1995, in an 18-inning game. Though Friday night’s game went 12 innings, the 6 double plays were all turned in the first 9 innings.

THE “CINCINNATTI”: The TinCaps turned a bizarre 5-1-3 putout in the bottom of the ninth inning in a dramatic 6-5 win at Dayton on April 27. With the tying run at second and winning run at first, Dayton’s Jeter Downs smashed a hard grounder to TinCaps third baseman Reinaldo Ilarazza. It caromed off his glove toward the mound where left-handed pitcher Travis Radke caught it and in a swift motion fired to Carlos Belen at first, just in time for the out (even though Downs has proven to be one of the fastest players in the league this year). Ironically, 513 is the area code for Cincinnati, which is about an hour away from Dayton, and the Dragons are a Reds affiliate.

FORT WAYNE TINCAPS 2018 GAME NOTES

TODAY’S STARTING PITCHER TODAY’S STARTING PITCHER

25 Nick Margevicius

HT: 6-5

WT: 220

B/T: L/L

HOMETOWN: North Royalton, Ohio

Drafted in the 7th Round in 2017 (Rider University)

AGE: 21

BORN: 06/18/96

OBTAINED:

THROWS: Fastball, Curveball, Changeup

STATS LEADER:

HOMETOWN: North Royalton, Ohio (about 18 miles south of Cleveland) HIGH SCHOOL: Saint Ignatius in Cleveland… One of the school’s alums is an owner of the nearby Lake County Captains, so the Wildcats play some of their home games at Classic Park; Nick got to pitch there several times while in high school… Had dozens of family and friends there to see him on Opening Day this year

COLLEGE: Rider University (Lawrenceville, NJ… about 60 miles south of New York City and 40 miles north of Philadelphia)… Mascot: Broncs (not Broncos)… Notable alum: Digger Phelps COLLEGIATE CAREER: 1st Team All-MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) in 2017, his junior year, after landing on the 2nd Team as a sophomore in 2016… As a junior, led Rider in innings pitched, WHIP, ERA, strikeouts, complete games, quality starts and strikeout-to-walk ratios (3.5 -to-1) as he went 6 or more innings in 11 of his 13 starts… Among starters in the MAAC, ranked 3rd in ERA and innings pitched, 4th in batters struck out looking… Tossed 2 complete games his junior year… Collegiate career record 3.16 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, with 195 strikeouts & 68 walks in 228 IP… Finance major; MAAC All-Academic Team; graduated in 3.5 years… Rider’s 64th MLB Draft pick and highest-selected since Ken Kramer (4th round, 1988)

COLLEGE COACH’S QUOTE: Barry Davis: “ His high school coach had nothing but great things to say about him.
