Overall Project progress is satisfactory. Key findings from the implementation review include: The Zahlé WWTP has been operational since October 2017. This is a tertiary treatment plant with a capacity of 37,300 m3/day. As of April 2019, it is receiving 18,000 m3/day (i.e. working at 49% capacity). When the additional network – funded by the Lake Qaraoun Pollution Prevention Project (LQPPP) – will be completed the plant will operate at full capacity. 9/15/2019 Page 1 of 5 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Lake Qaraoun Pollution Prevention Project (P147854) Zahlé sewerage networks: The project continues to make progress in increasing the collection and treatement of municipal sewage. The sewerage network civil works were initiated in August 2018 and various sections of sewerage networks have been completed in the upper parts of Zahle. This includes a modified schedule in order to respond to emergency sewage leakage situations in Hezzerta. Land expropriation for Zahlé sewerage networks involves the expropriation of 25 plots to enable construction of the sewerage network. The relevant expropriation files were sent by CDR to the Bekaa Expropriation Committee (BEC) on October 23, 2017 to decide on the compensation for each of the plots. As of April 2019, all expropriation decisions have been issued by the Bekaa Expropriation Committee and sent to CDR and CDR has sent the notifications to the affected landowners. The expropriation files are available at CDR. The Project continues to strengthen capacity to enable the Promotion of Good Agricultural Practices including Integrated Pest Management aimed at minimizing non-point source agricultural pollution in Lake Qaraoun. Three technical training workshops for technical staff of MoA and other stakeholders were conducted in May and June 2019. They covered Integrated Crop Management (ICM) of potato and lettuce, calibration of pesticides spraying equipment, safe and effective use of pesticides and container management. 10 farmers’ seminars were conducted between April and August 2019 and reached 200 farmers. Potato ICM Comparative Pilot Plots. Five potato ICM pilot plots were implemented between July and October 2018. The results obtained from the plots showed that it is possible and feasible to reduce the quantities of chemical fertilizers added to the potato crop without reducing the yield. A reduction ranging between 11 and 53 percent in quantities of fertilizers used and between 24 and 67 percent reduction in the cost of fertilizers was obtained. These results are intended to be shared during farmers’ seminars and other outreach activities to demonstrate effectiveness of such methods and to provide evidence for significant scale-up activities. The project implementation continues to benefit from strong collaboration among the participating Ministries and agencies.
