P REFACE ’ THIS book is the produ ct of several years experience “ ” P ar a i a a and n in the teaching of h m ceut c l L tin , is desig ed a and a a a i to present, in simple pr ctic l m nner, such rud ments of Latin as will enable the pharmacist to interpret correctly those portions of the language which he m ay encounter in the practice of his profession . It endeavors to teach these essentials in the limited time usually devoted hi ni a a to t s subject, recog zing the f ct th t students come variously prepared in regard to both prelim inary education a ni and pharmaceutical tr i ng . Neither drug store experience nor previous knowledge a ar and of L tin on the p t of the student is assumed , careful explanation is made of such points as are likely to prove S a troublesome . implicity is obt ined by spending but little time upon pronunciation ; by omitting exceptions to general ' ul a and a r es ; by noting but four c ses of the noun djective , with stress upon the Genitive ; by simplifying the third declension as much as seems advisable ; and by reducing ni verb work to a mi mum . The greater portion of the a a E i exercise work is on tr nsl tion from Latin to ngl sh , and the exercises and sentences are carefully graded in difficulty a a a and le d gr du lly into prescription work . E a a has ti speci l ttention been given to the writing of tles , i hi a and to prescript ons , the study of w ch is begun e rly in the course and continued until the end . Detailed explana M tion of etric prescriptions is given, and the requirements 1 1 1 iv P REFACE “ aw are n of Harrison L prescriptions oted . An unusally i n large number of prescript ons is presented , ma y of these having been selected from the files of prominent drug stores of Boston and vicinity . The appendix contains matter r valuable for supplementa y work and for reference, the - a a Latin English vocabul ry being particul rly complete . di -five m a Though vided into twenty lessons , the course y, a if advisable, be shortened by the omission of portion of the exercises, or lengthened by the introduction of other as a r a work, such the discussion of closely rel ted pha maceutic l o and fide t t pics , the introduction of bona prescrip ions for a inspection and interpret tion . The requirements of the course of study presented in P ar a a S and The h m ceutic l yllabus have been met, though this volume is designed primarily as a text book for colleges a a a of pharm cy , it is hoped th t it may prove of v lue to the a a a student of medicine, and lso find use as reference book a in the hands of the practising pharmacist and physici n .
