Tribhuvan University Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal 21 July, 2018 Message from the Vice-Chancellor I am pleased to learn that Information and Public Relation Division, Tribhuvan University (TU) is going to publish TU Today with the updated information and activities of Tribhuvan University to keep academia informed about TU programs and activities on the occasion of TU Day, 2018. TU is one of the largest universities in the world in terms of national coverage and number of students and also a pioneer public institution in higher education in Nepal, established in 1959 with the aim of producing capable human resources required for overall development of Nepal. It is among the most respected and desirable universities in Nepal which has been the first priority of the largest number of students; catering to over 80 percent of total enrolled students in higher education. TU has set a goal of establishing TU, Kirtipur as center of excellence in education and research in South- Asia. For that purpose, it has to be able to mobilize its internal resources for enhancing its academic strengths. TU has implemented semester system in all constituent and affiliated colleges across the country at master’s level. Similarly, TU has started Examinations Management Information System (EMIS) to provide students a transcript within 24 hours. TU has established Agriculture Campus, Gauradaha, in Jhapa from this year and resumed Rampur Agriculture Campus in Khairahani, Chitwan after an interruption of six years. TU is working to establish medical colleges in Bardibas and Butwal; and an engineering college in Chitwan. TU has established Research Endowment Fund at the central level. Similarly, Tribhuvan University Alumni Association, Nepal (TUAAN) is formulated in the University. TU has established a provision of Emeritus Professor to the highly qualified renowned and experienced retired professors. TU has initiated necessary activities to enhance its academic programs focusing on strengthening international collaboration and developing research facilities considering knowledge as key resource. As a result, TU has been able to produce competent graduates, especially in technical education who can compete globally. Creating academic environment and the quality of university education depend on commitment, hard work and dedication of faculty, staff and students. I, therefore, would like to urge upon the faculty, staff and student to join their hands in developing TU as shrine of learning and also a place honored for its education and research. Finally, I would like to congratulate the Editorial Board for maintaining the quality and continuity of the publication. Prof.Tirth Raj Khaniya , Ph.D. Vice Chancellor Tribhuvan University Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal 21 July, 2018 Message from the Rector It is my great pleasure to note that Information and Public Relation Division of Tribhuvan University is publishing the 2018 Issue of TU Today, a regular annual publication of this University. This is one of the im- portant publications that reveals the existing situation of TU and shows various possibilities for the future. As I turned over the pages of manuscript of this publication, I found that this is a valuable document that provides brief introduction of TU and presents the major academic events and work progress of the year. It covers, as far as possible, the activities done by five institutes, four faculties, four research Centers, 38 central departments, and 61 constituent campuses working in their respective fields. It is important that they are performing well to raise the academic standard of TU . TU covers more than 80 percent of the total national education. Yet it has not been able to meet the demand of technical education. Government of Nepal wants that we should increase its volume from the existing coverage of technical education. In order to meet this demand we need more support from the Government and other stakeholders. Likewise, we should take initiative to make the general education more practical and down to earth. It is also equally important that we need to internationalize our University by making it known to the rest of the world. For this purpose, we need to improve the quality of education. Now we have established academic relations with 139 different Universities around the world. But they are of more general type. Now, we have to seek international cooperation by signing specific project based agreements. I would like to thank all of those who are involved in the process of publishingTU Today. I hope it will make significant contribution to the academic progress of this university. I also wish this publication would become a window to understand the university to its fullest extent. Prof. Sudha Tripathi, Ph.D. Rector Tribhuvan University Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal 21 July, 2018 Message from the Registrar I am delighted to know that Information and Public Relation Division of Tribhuvan University is going to publish the 2018 Issue of TU Today. As was done in the previous years, this issue is publishing the major activities conducted in different fields throughout the year. It is significant that a university has to disseminate the achievements made in academic endeavors. As I see the things mentioned in TU Today, I find that this is a valuable document that reveals the major aspects of the university. First it provides the brief introduction of TU and the overall structure of its constituent parts. As of today it runs five institutes, four faculties, four research centers, 38 Central departments, and 61 constituent campuses working to achieve the goals set by TU. With all their efforts they are performing well to improve the quality of education. We understand that TU has to emphasize technical education to meet the requirements of the nation where more than 80 percent of education is covered by TU. It has to raise its educational standard so that we can go in the direction of making this university a world class. For the purpose, we have to internationalize our university with many more academic exchange programs. So far we have the updated record of more than 139 MoUs signed with different universities around the world. We also understand that there are various obstacles that we have been facing and we have yet to face. We have to overcome the challenges and find new prospects for the development of university. Despite all else we have been working very hard to go ahead in the path of progress. Finally I would like to request all stakeholders to participate in the process of making the largest and old university of this country to serve nation and its people through quality education which, in deed, is demand of the day.
