An example is the Valles Caldera in the Jemez Mountains, near to Santa Fe and Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA. The caldera is the circular feature (centre) in this false-colour (red=vegetation) Landsat image, which shows an area about 80 kilometres across of the region in North-Central New Mexico. The collapsed caldera is 24 kilometres in diameter and is the result of two explosive super- eruptions 1.6 and 1.1 million years ago (i.e., 500,000 years apart). All rocks in the photo below are part of the 250 metre thick deposits of the older of the two super- eruptions at the Valles Caldera.
